Cheap accomodation Spain/France Pyrenees region.

Like the sign says. I'm looking for good non-rip-off places to stay. I had planned to camp for some of it but camp sights are running more expensive than hotels. Has anyone got any suggestions? I'm on the road now, packing a tent and looking for places to stay as I go.

Cheers

Municipal camping

I've just returned from a camping trip to France.

Look out for "Municipal Camping".
In most towns there are camp sites that are run/subsidised by the local council.
They are found by following the signs at junctions. The signs are similar to other road/ street signs and are made of metal.
Prices varied from 3 to 7 euros per night.
Municipal campsites are of a basic but very good standard usually with free showers, toilets and wash rooms.
After a bit of practice you'll soon get good at spotting the signs, :thumbup1:. They are not as well advertised as comercial campsites. We found some by asking in shops ect.

Camping is the best idea, it isnt cheap staying in Pension's really. You can also get away with speaking to farmers, they're very accomodating if you ask and will let you camp for a night or two (but don't bank on it)

you could try here Cycling Holidays Pyrenees, Skiing Holidays Pyrenees, Motorcycling Holidays Pyrenees, Activity Holidays Pyrenees, Holidays, Accommodation, Tour de France, Pyrenees
basic place as the price would suggest but a warm welcome and good home cooked food,

Dave,

More or less decided on a municipal site for tomorrow night. I emailed them about vacancies. How important is it to call ahead? I'm sure they can squeeze us in? Right?

Book ahead !!!

Book ahead . . . . I never plan that far.
I usually dont start looking for a campsite till about 4.oo pm.
You sound way too organised
Which way are you headed ?, West, Mid or East Pyrenees.
Can maybe give you a couple of good routes, but in the Pyrenees all you need to do is head of the main roads.
All the side & minor roads are great

Camp sites in Spain aren't as expensive as the urban mythologists claim - it's just that there are hardly any municipal sites so there is not a like for like comparison on that score.

Generally 2nd class category sites cost about €12-15 per night for a lone biker, and about €3-4 extra for the pillion. This is away from the coasts and big attractions like the Ordesa National Park. In contrast to France, however, these site have fill bar/restarant facilities that are open until midnight. You certainly won't be ripped-off in a spanisg camp site, where a 25 cl beer costs from €1.20 - 1.50 - unlike in France, where I found myself paying €3.50 for a Kronenbourg last week!

It's always best to look for the secondary roads, but epecially at this time of year. Check out some of my Pyrenean routes for a few ideas.

Simon
