Border crossing Greece to Turkey
 

Next year my travels will take me into Greece. I would really like to cross the border into Turkey at the Kipi crossing and return the same way after a visit to Istanbul.

I will be traveling on a UK passport.

What should I think about before I leave the UK and again as i get closer to the crossing, to enable a smooth crossing into Turkey?

Is there anything a I need on the way back?

I am a solo traveller on a XT660Z tenere.

You will need a Turkish e-visa obtainable in advance and see if your insurance company will extend your cover to Turkey but if not you can buy cover at the border.

Don't forget to take your V5C (Registration Document) with you.

I had a little difficulty finding a UK insurance company that would provide a Green Card for Turkey, you may need to shop around. But as Mark Manley has already informed you, you can purchase insurance at the border; look for the office inside duty free building.

Fill your tank at the BP garage 1 mile south the of the Egnatia Odos (signposted 51 Feres), 6 miles from the border, as Turkish fuel is expensive!

Turkish fuel is much cheaper as the fuel in Greece. 6 tl (1 euro) per liter at the moment in Turkey compared to 1.5 euro per liter in Greece...

Also insurance at the Kipi border is very expensive (at least 50 euro), if you cannot arrange it beforehand in the UK you are better off using the border more North Bulgaria - Turkey insurance about 10 euro.

I entered Turkey from Greece about 4 years ago with my Canadian-plated motorcycle.

Insurance was available at the border - I don't recall it being particularly expensive, but it wasn't dirt-cheap either.

The Turkish officials were very detail-oriented. Very polite, very welcoming, but also very detail-oriented. So do have all your documents in order and available.

The whole entry process, including buying the insurance, took about 40 minutes.

Can I get currency at the crossing into or in Turkey at the border crossing?

You will find atm everywhere. Best currency always.

You didn't indicate what your planned route from (presumably) Ireland to Turkey will be. I have a suggestion for you:

A few years ago, I travelled from Switzerland to Istanbul, and on the way there, I rode through Hungary, Romania, and Bulgaria, entering Turkey from Bulgaria. On the way back, I rode across the top of Greece, from Kipoi to Igoumenitsa.

I really enjoyed the trip through Romania & Bulgaria - I wrote a post about it here: Notes from a September 2011 ride through Romania, Bulgaria, Turkey, and Greece. I was very disappointed by Greece, I found it expensive, inhospitable, and depressing. Perhaps that was due to Greece being in the depths of their economic crisis in 2011 - but I was astonished at how expensive everything was in Greece, and at how high the VAT and other taxes were in Greece.

I won't repeat everything I said in the above-mentioned post, but I suggest you give it a read, and perhaps consider entering and leaving Turkey via Bulgaria, and perhaps touring Hungary on the way down, and some of the more interesting Balkan countries on the way back.

Your UK (Northern Ireland) insurance might cover you in Romania & Bulgaria (check the fine print on your green card), but you will need to buy insurance at the borders of the various Balkan countries as you enter them. Although it might appear at first glance that the cost of the temporary insurance policies at the various Balkan countries kind of 'adds up', the reality is that it is more than offset by the significantly lower prices of food and accommodation in those countries.

Turkey - Greece April 2019
 

Hi Im looking for any tips or advise as I,m planning to enter Turkey from the Bulgarian boarder to travel around Turkey for 4 weeks and attend ANZAC service at Gallipolli on 25th April then get a ferry to Greece to travel around there also for 4 weeks.
Im driving a New Zealand Registered Toyota Landcruiser with NZ Passport.

Any help would be appreciated
