BOLIVIA to PERU - Northside of Titicaca ???
 

Hi all,

Just wondering I fancy doing the route which runs from La Paz to Huancane in Peru. But someone told me there is no boarder crossing! They were cyclists so didn't have the hassle of Aduana to deal with. Therefore there instructions on how to cross were not wholly useful to me. Have any motorcyclists or 4-wheelers done this route who could shed some light on it?

Did it on motorcycles in 2007. There was a customs at Puerto Arista (Bolivia) but no immigration. Nothing on the Peruvian side! We just rode around the chain (6:15 pm). Ours were Peruvian motorcycles so no problem with no customs, but had to go to an immigration office somewhere else and get the stamps (closest one is Puno). There must be a customs there too to sort out the bike.

Long lonely track! Not really sure where the border was! Left La Paz early and arrived Mojo 8:30 pm.

Compulsory liability insurance might be another problem, just as it is when coming in through Copocabana

Hi, Copacabana is the best option. But be careful with Peruvian policemen in the border, sametimes ask for false insurance to get some money. Cheers.

I have the insurance (Mercosaw) so that shouldn't be a problem.

Though it seems a bit tricky - presumably must find immigration exit stamp in La Paz, sign out bike with customs in Puerto Acosta, and then head to Puno to do the Peruvian formalities? I wonder if the Peruvian authorities would make any hassles for, saying I'd crossed in illegally, etc.

Well if anyone has done it recently that's be great!
