Bali to Mumbai/India

On my last leg of my 2017 RTW i plan to fly from Darwin to Denpasar/Bali and ride from there to Mumbai. Has anybody done this trip and any ideas of how many non-road, ferry crossings and other paperwork/planning. would appreciate some help. Thanks
Aditya

We have done a similar route in reverse, travelling from Uk to Australia - going through India, Myanmar, Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia on route to Australia.

Do you plan on flying the bike from Darwin to Bali? I don't think this is possible as the aircraft going to Darwin are not that big so it depends what size bike you are on. We tried but none of the freight forwarders would even quote us once we mentioned motorcycles.

We were originally going to air freight from Bali to Perth but the costs were ridiculous so it worked out cheaper for us to take a 24hr ferry from Java to Borneo and then air freight our bikes from Kuching in Malaysian Borneo to Perth via KL. The bikes did not have to be crated and the cost was 1/2 that quoted in Bali.

Regarding ferry's - between the islands of Indonesia, the ferry's are pretty regular and straight forward. However, getting from Sumatra to Malaysia is a bit of a pain but I believe Mr Lims onion boat is back up and running from Medan to Penang (search on HUBB for better info)

Regarding roads - The worst will be in India, in the other countries you can follow sealed roads if you wish for the entire journey apart from a few sections which may be washed away or worked on.

To cross Myanmar you will need to be on an organised tour to use your own vehicle - we used Burma senses - others are also available.

Dear Pheasant56,
Thanx for the detailed reply. Very kind of you. Yes, I was planning to AirLift from Darwin to Denpasar/Bali and then ferry/road to Mumbai. I am aware of Burma/senses and shall be using them. i will research the ferry crossings from Denpasar to Burma, as there will be some.

'..... take a 24hr ferry from Java to Borneo and then air freight our bikes from Kuching in Malaysian Borneo to Perth via KL.' This is a better option. What is KL?

This helps me to research further, including onion boat-options. once again:thanx. I will be on a Royal ENfield-Bike.
cheers!!
