Australia - Asia - Africa - Americas - RTW
 

I’m located on the east coast of Australia and starting to plan a RTW route. I am at the very beginning of my planning journey and I know there is a heap of info here, I’m keen to hear people’s thoughts / options for ferrying from northern Australia into Asia.

Then from there what’s the most overland route possible?

Can’t wait for my big world map to turn up and start planning.

For context / wether it makes any difference I’m dual nationality UK / AUS.

Well from northern Australia - aka Darwin I suppose? - there is only one ship route afaik. But it docks both in Dili and in Singapore - so it makes it two choises. However importing a foreign vehicle into Singapore isnt an easy task I have read. And then you will miss Indonesia. For me Indonesia was the very highlight (among many others of course but still…) of my RTW trip. So my advise: Ship to Dili, East Timor and ride through Indonesia. Its a great country on a bike!

Further along Asia - well as I see it, when you get to Thailand there is two options - you can continue through Laos and then China (with guides and all that is with that aspect) and into Kasakhstan or Kyrgizstan.

The other option is to fly the bike from Bangkok or maybe even Kuala Lumpur to Nepal and continue on from there as Myanmar is closed and most probably will be for a good while… I dont how the border problems between Pakistan and India will last or even if it affects foreigners (somebody could maybe provide some more info about that?) But hopefully it will be solved relatively soon.

Fellow east coaster. Have you looked at hiring a bike for Indonesia / Asia and then sending your bike to South Africa?

Bikes are so cheap to rent in Asia it’s hardly worth the hassle of shipping and it takes the hassle out of getting the route right. As snake boy says, Singapore can be a hassle and you kind of transit it anyway into Malaysia.

I paid $9 AUD a day for a Honda ADV160 which is perfect for Indonesia. Not sure what bike you are on, but small bikes/scooters are perfect for Asia.

If it were me I would think about island hopping all over Asia, renting a bike wherever and whenever you want, then fly home and ship the bike across to whichever continent has the best deal.

Last year there was a crew that would ship your bike out to Europe in I think April from Brisbane and store it for you till you pick it up, then ship it back in I think September for about $5k. But be damned if I can remember who it was.

I agree with what Homers GSA said.

In South East Asia (SEA) renting bikes are relatively cheap. So it would make sense to fly and rent bikes and then ship your bike to Europe/Africa for the big trip.

I have toured almost all the countries in SEA except for Cambodia and Myanmar which I chose not to go.
Singapore nothing to see on a bike.

You don't need big cc bikes in SEA due to the slow speeds. The exception is in my home country Malaysia where you can go up to 110 km/h or higher on the highways and also in Thailand where you can ride faster if you choose to.
