ardennes region to strasbourg
 

I will be riding motorway from calais to valenciennes then looking to do D roads from Revin to strasbourg on the second day. Does anybody know any decent roads or routes that I should look to be doing? Dont want to miss out on awesome roads. Many thanks

With your Sat Nav set to "aviod highways" try this route;Valenciennes - Marche En Famenne (Bel) - Bastogne - Ettelbruck (Lux) - Echternach - Trier (Ger) - Idar/Oberstein - Elmstein - Strasbourg.

I'd take the D964 from Douzy all the way to Neufchateau (nothing spectacular but a pretty road that follows the river Meuse) and then Epinal and across through the Parc Naturel des Ballons de Vosges (just pick a road), coming onto Strasbourg from the south.

Best suggestion I can offer is that you purchase a Michelin map (no other brand, get the Michelin one) of France, and pay attention to the roads that have a thin green line beside them. That thin green line indicates scenic or interesting routes.

Once you have studied the 'national' Michelin map of France (the map that shows the whole country), you might then want to buy a 'regional' Michelin map of the area you plan to ride. The 'regional' map has a lot more detail. Be aware, though, that I have always found it difficult to do route planning directly from the regional maps without having a national map handy to show context.

The Michelin maps are a bit more expensive than the other brands, but they are worth it for the detail and perspective they provide.

+1 for the Bastogne to Ettelbruck route . Come out of Bastogne and turn off by Esche sur Sure before the bridge - very tight and twisty .
You could also try Best Biking Roads web site , there are a number of good roads on there for the area you are interested in .
The D964 from Stenay , thru to Verdun and then onwards is also very good too .

For the Ardenne part, as a local I would recommend this road, from Dinant to Virton. It's a scenic road, not a fast road.
If you have enough time, you will love it.
