Anyone left for South America in March?

My planned departure for South America from the USA has been delayed due to work. I've read many recommendations saying the trip should be started in September but I'm considering starting late, during the beginning of March. I don't really want to postpone the trip until next September, again due to work.

Has anyone started this trip in March? Is the weather going to be severe enough to make postponing the departure date the common sense thing to do?

Thanks in advance for any comments.

Going through Central America would probably be the same as the climate does not change that much. But you will get to South America in winter and it is just plain awful. If you plan to go camping, you'll have to bear a lot of mud :(.
