Accross the U.S. for my 40th b-day

I'm planning a trip across the U.S. for my 40th birthday. I'm planning on taking about 2 - 3 weeks to make the round trip. My first thought was to take Rt. 50 from East Coast to West Coast. The Alternate route is to try and locate as much of Rt. 40, the Lincoln Hwy. and travel that. Does anyone have any experience with these roads? Any good resources for locating and traveling Rt. 40? Anything that I should make sure I visit along the way?

Thanks for your input.

H40 east to west

Hi, I recently passed thru Washington DC and crossed 40, though I was going south heading for the Blueridge Parkway. Well worth riding as its hundreds of miles of twisty hilly and stunning country. Bonus you can go to the Dragons Tail (Deals Gap, 318 bends in 11 miles) where there are plenty of great roads.Tennesse to Kentucky Appalacian Mts; are cool. Good luck and have fun.

Brpw

I live about 20 miles from Skyline Drive which feeds into the Blue Ridge Parkway where it starts in Virginia. For the last few years my friends and I have taken the trip from tip to tail on the BRPW each fall. You're right it's an amazing road. I'm looking for an East/West crossing for the US for my trip, but thanks for the input.

I took US-50 from Nevada to Virginia and I did not like it that much.
I have taken US-36 three times its much nicer.
The link is our trip on US-36 this last June.

Route 40 passes very close to Dinosaur on the Colorado/Utah border. Make sure you stop and pay it a visit. I passed by that way a few years back when cycling across your beautiful country from DC to Seattle. Dinosaur National Park is just breathtaking and I believe that it is the quietest place in the whole of the US. While you are there, have a go at white water rafting on the Green River to complete your experience.
