1 WEEK SOUTH AMERICA- Where to go???
Hello bikers!!!!
I'm planning to do a quick, 1 week-10 days jaunt around somewhere in south america, just by flying out and renting a bike somewhere. Does anyone have any tips of where to go for that kind of time period? Any tips greatly appreciated. By demand, a little more depth- This would be a trip in early-mid March next year. I would be looking to do terrain that's manageable on a bike that's not too expensive to rent, something like a 250cc. I'm looking for a place with (mostly) paved, curving roads that's just great to motor through to take in scenery, not too worried about going specifically to see sites, ruins, etc, or dirt roads. (although some would be fun) A big concern is how good the roads would be in weather, as in such a small time getting stuck in road-slurry can take up a large portion of what should be riding time! Would the weather be fairly dry in early-mid March in places like Peru or Columbia? Columbia sounds great quastdog- where did you go exactly? I've done trips similar to this in India and Vietnam, just one-week excursions, it's a fair bit to organize for a short time scale but well worth it. Thanks for everything so far, been looking up some flights and doing some more research, the Northern part of the South American continent would be better re cost coming from the US. Further tips still greatly appreciated! |
You want to what?

For lack of much information, try Colombia - the mountainous areas in the central part of the country - east, central and west cordilleras. Lots of interesting places to see in about 8 days. Next dry season is like December to early March. |
1 Week!!!
Firstly good luck. Even presuming you are experienced, it would seem a lot to organise on a 10 day stretch, and with all your gear and all, it could prove an expensive week, no?. However, I agree with Quastdog about Colombia but I'm a bit biased. It's very very wet here at the moment, but I doubt you can beat Locombia for people and scenery - got some spanish?
Otherwise, I'd try a jaunt up the coast of Brasil - how's your portuguese and Samba moves? Suerte (If you need any local help, let me know) |
+1 for Colombia, here now. Bring your raingear!

If it were me, I would go to Cuzco Peru. Lots of interesting stuff within a day or 2 ride, and several places that rent Hondas (Tornado/XR250 and Falcon/NX400) there. I was there in November and it rained quite a lot. Would be worth checking weather for the time ofyear for your trip.

off topic momentarily :offtopic:
hey mr Ron am in Rionegro meself, near medellin, finishing up my trip - u near or around for a beer ? - give us a shout if so - am planning to continue from here later next year - suerte on topic ... 10 days in South America ?- my favorite was northwest argentina - hire a bike in mendoza or Salta and head for the Andes - if you want remote -remote, 20 different types of dirtroad in a day and fantastic people to boot (not literally) - Argentina is the place. I have fotos here at Flickr: Photos from f.ward - scroll around for fotos marked argentina if you want to get a sense of the roads that await you here + 2 for colombia too - this is the best country - easy to find dirt and mud too - people amazing. Impossible to rent motos in medellin i found and expensive - bogota better i presume also lake titticaca peru/boliva border - town called puno - I hired xr250 for a couple of days - dead cheap and great dirt roads - |
I recommend going to Peru, Cuzco. I was there last month and rented a bike for 4 days. I had a blast. PM if you need more details.

And I mentioned Colombia, because its closer to fly to from the US than Argentina. I assumed bigmonts is from the US. Bigmonts: we're doing alot of speculation here? What's the story? What kind of riding do you want to do? What kind of vacation is it? Where are you coming from? Inquiring minds want to know! |
