Riding round Africa

Hi Guys,

In less than a week I am departing for my 8 month journey around Africa and Europe.

I will be posting some details here for anyone looking to do a similar trip or just wanna see what I am up to. The Hubb has provided so much info for me and the planning of my trip. I would like to continue giving future Adventure Riders as much info as possible.

Here is my blog www.vansafrica.com.

Cheers

Good luck on your trip and if you need a bed in Antwerp, Belgium, just give me a shout, I'd be happy to accomodate you.

advice

Hi Van,

I plan to buy a motorcycle in South Africa in September and head north to Kenya, around Lake Victoria through Uganda, Rwanda...ending up in Namibia and back down to South Africa after about 4 months to sell my bike and head back home to Canada. What problems might I encounter in getting the bike registered and insured in South Africa, and in taking it into countries in southern, eastern, and southwestern Africa without a carnet, just using TIP approach? My route will be South Africa, Zimbabwe, Moz, Malawi, Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burindi, Zambia, Namibia, Botswana, South Africa. I have heard that there are only a few countries demanding carnet these days including Egypt, South Africa itself (for bikes originating outside SA)...

Your trip is very inspiring. I have done some bike trips in South Africa/Lesotho and Ethiopia in that past, looking forward to this next one.

Any tips on buying a dual purpose bike in SA? I am looking at something 5-10 years old depending on km. and condition, and between 250 and 650 cc.

Regards,
Larry

Larry it will be really easy!

All you have to do is buy it and get what they call a "traffic register" and you can register the bike on your passport number at the local traffic authorities. The dealer should be able to help you with all of that or if you are buying private ask the seller to point you in the direction of the traffic offices.

I dont foresee any trouble or the need of a carnet for the countries you are travelling too, but if you want one just get it from the AA in SA and it cost about R3000.

Check Bikefind, Autotrader, Gumtree for the best deals on bikes. Good Luck!

I should have spent more time but you make due with the time and money you have. I have been following your trip for quite some time ta-rider.

3 days till I am off. Cant wait!
