My 47.000km journey all over Italy!

1 Attachment(s)
Hi Travellers!

Last month I got back home after my 6 month journey all over Italy. Starting the past 1st June I rode 47.000km visiting every italian region (1 week each one), discovering the best of each one with the help of local bikers who hosted and driven me. Furthermore, thanks to the support I have received by the Motociclismo magazine I could change bikes along the road. So, I tried 2 Bmw, 3 Ducati, 2 Honda and 1 Yamaha. Such a great experience, indeed!:thumbup1:

I have created this Thread for sharing my journey with all of those willing to know more about Italy. bier

With the next post I'll show you pictures about my first week in Lombardy!
Here I was at the Motociclismo's headquarter, the starting point in Milan.

?c?

Cheers from Rome!:mchappy:

wow, that there is some truly serious mileage!

Gotta admit, that I really do love Italy, too! There is just........ well, EVERYTHING: mountains, beaches, history, architecture, culture, food... but I couldn´t stay for 6 months, or none of my clothes would fit me any more

Used to visit the country by bike 1-2 times a year, ridden all the way to Sicily several times, and never felt bored. My #1 country in Europe for sure.

SandroRoma 5 Jan 2015 14:12

Hi Pecha!

Indeed, it was quite a long ride over my own country!
I did few journey around Europe and Asia but then I thought..what's the point on going RTW if I do not know very well my home?
So, I got on the saddle... ;)

Stay tuned...soon I will post my pictures!

We too had a problem leaving Italy on our RTW trip...Too much to see, eat and drink... Its our No1 country in Europe.

Bloody expensive in parts though...we are renting a two bedroom house in Crete for well under half the cost of camping in Italy. If this was not the case we would still be in Catania Sicily.

Italy...Simply stunning.

SandroRoma 5 Jan 2015 15:21

Hi Overland!

You're on a RTW...Wow, congrats!
Happy to hear you past in Italy on your itinerary...and that you liked it!
Yeah, it could be expensive if you come here during high season or if you don't know which places are cheap but close enough to your POI.

Next time...call me! :)

Interesting trip.

I done about the same mileage going around three continents. I'm sure there is plenty to fill a 6 months trip in Italy. It has the most amount of Unesco world heritage sites and so much culture and different regions.

I'm going there next April as a part of a 4 months Europe tour.

I have a feeling it will be hard to get out of Italy, unless I'm getting broke... ;)

Hi Guillaume,

I know it's quite a long mileage to be all in the same country, it's always great fun when people (even italians) tell me "I have been here and there in Italy and you?" ...and I reply..."I rode in Italy too, for about 50.000km!"
Guess their faces?!? :mchappy:

I've spent a week for every region (n.20) and NOW I can say "I know my home!"
.... So, if you need help with your planning just let me know...I will advice you on where to go and what to see! bier

That's a great offer and I will take you up on it.

I will be entering Italy in the beginning of April from the French Riviera, Menton.

I haven't yet precisely planned my itinerary in Italy, but the general idea is to ride the coast to Cinque Terre, Pisa, visit a friend in Toscana, Check out Rome, ride the Amalfi coast, ferry Bari to Croatian coast, ride up then back in Italy for Venice and the Dolomites and crisscrossing the alps.

That's an early plan, any suggestion is greatly welcomed :)

I'm looking at your website, lots of great pictures and ideas in there for planning an itinerary in Italy.

Hi Guillaume,

At a glance it seems to be already a good route to follow! I might suggest you something from Amalfi to Bari. Ever heard of the region of Abruzzo?
By the way, if you rather you can keep me updated and I can help you out with the route planning!
Well...if come to Rome, you know...we have to share a bier

Alessandro

Guillaume 6 Jan 2015 21:30

So I've inspired myself from your website and have updated my itinerary:

  • Cinque Terre
  • Alpi Apuane
  • Fortress of Verrucole and Isola Santa
  • Castelnuovo della Garfagnana
  • Pisa
  • Florence
  • Volterra
  • Siena
  • Orvieto (through Crete Sinesi)
  • Rome
  • National Park of Abruzzo
  • Lake of Scanno
  • Sulmona
  • Costa Amalfitana
  • Bari

Well done!
Just some pieces of advice more...
[*]Florence[*]Volterra[*]Siena
(go to every POI riding over the Chianti, and if you rather offroading you should try to ride on the "Eroica" trek....a tremendous experience!
[*]Rome[*]National Park of Abruzzo[*]Lake of Scanno[*]Sulmona
(please believe me! Between Rome and Sulmona add on the Lake of Campotosto, Norcia and Campo Imperatore)

Here we are at the starting line!
(Guys, forgive me probable grammar mistakes!):innocent:

As I told you in the previous post, I started my adventure from the Motociclismo magazine headquarter, in Milan. So that, my first week was totally spent in the region of Lombardy.
Sadly it was, as it would be almost the whole journey, a bloody chilly and rainy week...Anyway we know, even a storm won't stop bikers :mchappy:

Here I was riding into the Gorges of Tremosine along the Lake of Garda. It was a tremendous ride as the Gorges were narrow and 1st\2nd gear upward. You have to go slow and pay attention to the width of your bike especially with panniers. Once I reached the end of the twisting tight road I stopped on a very nice balcony were I could see a wide view of the Lake of Garda....I was stunning!

What kind of place is that? Might you wonder...The answer is simple: The pearl of Lombardy. It's a very pretty and tiny village which literally lay down on the river Mincio. Tell you what...it's the favourite place for Lombardy's citizens where to celebrate marriage! :cool4:

http://www.ridesoul.net/wp-content/u...6905550_n1.jpg

I don't think I need to add more. I guess you know better than me what we are talking about! :devil2:
I can just add where is it (Val Trompia). Quite an enjoyable ride will take you to Tremosine sul Garda (First picture) throughtout the beautiful lake of Valvestino (the picture below)!

http://www.ridesoul.net/wp-content/u...7590640_n2.jpg

As well as the whole northen Italy even Lombardy is a wine producer so if you need to have a ride break, you should stop over to Ferghettina wine house! bier

As you know Lombardy to us also means Alps, Dolomities…the beginning of them. A stylishly beginning thanks to the Gavia Pass. I’m sure you heard about it but if you have ever seen it, take a look at the pic below. Here I was at the top Gavia Pass….I promise it was June! :eek3:

Finally, if you think you let your Motogp Rider soul takes the control of your right wrist and need a spiritual retreat, this church it's in the perfect place!:innocent:
