Labrador Hiway - on it now

Sitting in a hotel in Churchill Falls, looking at the snow fall. Its been some journey so far. Ottawa, Quebec City and my first break down - minor but frustrating. Then onto Baie-Comeau where it was either the ferry to Matane or the 389 north, depending on repairs. Well I LUCKED out, got repaired and on a day where it was 29 degrees hot and sunny I rode north. Stopped about 2 hours from Fermont to camp and during the night the weather changed. Rain, much wind. Got up in a terrible wind, packed and headed to Labrador city. You may not like them, but Tim Horton's on the road is a welcome site. The weather going to Churchill Falls did not look promising, but I pushed ahead. Bad idea. 40 km/h sustained winds with gusts up to 80 - I was pushed all over the road - including bouts of rain, heavy rain, then I ran right into a full blizzard. Ice pellets' coming down. Slow and sure, the mantra became - stay upright - stay on the road - keep moving forward - don't worry about time....I arrived safely. Got warmed up, and tomorrow is looking much better - I hope - or another night will be spent here....

Sounds "fun."

It is only May, so it's reasonable to expect some bits of inclement weather now and then. Some of the mountains of western US and Canada are still getting snow, too.

On those rare occasions when 1) it gets dark at night, and 2) there are no clouds, you stand a pretty good chance of seeing the aurora from Labrador. It's worth rolling over and looking out a north-facing window every now and then. Same will be true all the way across, although as you get further north the interval of actual darkness shrivels and eventually vanishes completely.

Down at New Melbourne but we're hitting the T'railway west so we'll be turning off at Deer Lake in about 2 days time to head up to Labrador.
