Well - time came around again to head up to the northern part of Mainland China. The wooden transport pallet got modified a bit and makes bike shipment even easier using CargoBuckles to hold the front wheel in place, for the rear the trusty Pitbull Trailer Restraint mounted as usual. All the riding equipment, spare parts, tyres and tools got shipped from Shanghai to Beijing on the truck with the bike as the Shanghai - Beijing ride is rather dull and boring and did that stretch too many times in the past. Really looking forward to get out again riding into the Northern dusty deserts, mountain ranges and grasslands of China and got a few runs planned and mapped out.

Afternoon ride out to the Great Wall. . Mutianyu is a section of the Great Wall of China located in Huairou County 70km north-east of central Beijing. The Mutianyu section of the Great Wall is connected with Jiankou in the west and Lianhuachi in the east. As one of the best-preserved parts of the Great Wall, the Mutianyu section of the Great Wall used to serve as the northern barrier defending the capital and the imperial tombs. The Chinese Aviation Museum (located 40km North of central Beijing), is also sometimes referred to as Datangshan due to its location adjacent to the mountain of the same name. The museum was first opened to the public on 11 November 1989, to celebrate the 40th. Anniversary of the Founding of the People's Liberation Army Air Force.
Part of the museum is located inside a cave in the side of Datangshan Mountain. The cavern was originally part of the tunnels and underground bunker system of Shahe Airbase, and is 586 metres long by 11 metres high by 40 metres wide. A lovely day out around Beijing, taking my pedal powered two wheeled mode of transportation as the motorbike friendly Beijing Municipality Traffic Management Bureau http://www.bjjtgl.gov.cn launched a new campaign and enforces restrictions to use motorbikes within the 6th. ring-road of Capital City Beijing once again.

Next Beijing Day Out by bicycle stop = Temple of Heaven, literally the Altar of Heaven is a complex of religious buildings situated in the southeastern part of central Beijing. The complex was visited by the Emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties for annual ceremonies of prayer to Heaven for good harvest. Wudangzhao Lamasery is the largest and most well preserved Tibetan Lamasery in Inner-Mongolia. It belongs to the group of the three grand lamaseries in China together with the Potala Palace in Tibet and the Kumbum Monastery in Qihai. In Mongolian "Wudang" means "Willow", the temple is situates right amidst the willow-shaded area and that is why it was named "Wudangzhao".
The famed Wudangzhao Lamasery is situated approximately 70 kilometres northeast of Baotou. The entire compound boasts of six main halls, the most elaborate them being the Sugabi Prayer Hall. Departing Baotou going South towards Ordos with a quick stop at a touristy desert section (Xiangshawan) of the so called Kubuqi desert = Singing Sand Ravine, Resonant Sand Bay or Resonant Sand Gorge. You will notice that all the names have to do with sound – that’s because of a unique natural phenomenon where the sand at Xiangshawan Desert makes interesting echoes which varies according to weather and how you walk on the sand e.g. when sliding down from the 90-meter-high, 45-degree sand dunes of Xiangshawan Desert, one can supposedly hear the sound of car and aircraft engines! It is also said that the sand also produces a light “shhhh” sound as you walk on it. However, it is very difficult to hear such sounds today as Xiangshawan Desert has become quite crowded and noisy with tourists (like a zoo following the standard of most popular attractions in Mainland China). Nobody can explain this strange phenomenon – not even scientists and researchers studying this sound. There have been quite a number of folk stories on this sound – some say that a Tibetan lamasery was located here and it was suddenly buried in sand (together with all the lama monks who were chanting when that happened) by a sandstorm so it was thought that the sound was produced by the lingering spirits of the lamas who are still chanting! Ordos is one of the twelve major subdivisions of Inner Mongolia, People's Republic of China. It is within the Ordos Loop of the Yellow River. Although mainly rural, Ordos is administered as aprefecture-level city. The administrative seat is at Dongsheng which had a population of 582,544 inhabitants at the 2010 census. Another Banner is being urbanized quickly around the city of Ejin Horo with about 251,894 inhabitants at the 2010 census which is the seat of Ordos Airport. Built for over a million people, the city of Ordos was designed to be the crowning glory of Inner Mongolia. Doomed to incompletion however, this futuristic metropolis now rises empty out of the deserts of northern China. Only 2 percent of its buildings were ever filled; the rest has largely been left to decay, abandoned mid-construction, earning Ordos the title of China’s Ghost City...... Spirited laps around the Ordos International Circuit, built in 2010, is a motorsport facility located in Kangbashi New Area, Ordos City, Inner Mongolia, China. It hosted a round of the China Touring Car Championship, Scirocco Cup China and Superleague Formula in 2010. Thousands of overloaded coal truck stuck in traffic jams or fighting for every road space and possible spot available speeding along. They are overloaded and leave nasty grooves in the asphalt and quite dangerous to ride between the grooves due to spillage of motor oil and diesel, feels like riding on ice.... As many know, TIC = This Is China and The Middle Kingdom called China works in mysterious ways and the "safety rules & regulations" in some provinces (Inner Mongolia / Shanxi) require re-filling a motorcycle out of tin buckets (flimsy leaking tin cans most of the times of all sizes and shapes).
Remember the slogan "Safety First" please as the petrol station attendant fills up the flimsy and filthy tin cans with petrol and one has to fill up 10-20m away from the petrol pumps. Not an easy task as its quite difficult to fill the petrol tank that sits high on import bikes like a Ducati-MTS and BMW-GS12 with full and heavy leaking tin cans. Well ~ while strolling through a Chinese style supermarket the other day in Baotou found a great device to protect the paint work from scratching and some petrol spillage.... Datong (Shanxi), two night stop over to catch up with work projects and a bit of a decent clean up and sightseeing....
Don’t let first appearances deceive you – gritty, polluted and unattractive it may be, but Datong is the main jumping-off point for two of northern China’s most spectacular sights. The phenomenal Yungang Caves and the gravity-defying Hanging Temple can both be chalked off in a single day,... Here we are at the famous Hanging Temple out at the mountains.... The Hanging Temple, also Hanging Monastery or Xuankong Temple is a temple built into a cliff (75m above the ground) near Mount Heng in Hunyuan County, Datong City, Shanxi province, China. The closest city is Datong, 65 kilometers to the northwest. Built more than 1,500 years ago, this temple is notable not only for its location on a sheer precipice but also because it is the only existing temple with the combination of three Chinese traditional religions: Buddhism, Taoism, and Confucianism. The structure is kept in place with oak crossbeams fitted into holes chiseled into the cliffs. The main supportive structure is hidden inside the bedrock. The monastery is located in the small canyon basin, and the body of the building hangs from the middle of the cliff under the prominent summit, protecting the temple from rain erosion and sunlight. Coupled with the repair of the dynasties, the color tattoo in the temple is relatively well preserved. West of Datong, the monumental Yungang Caves, a set of Buddhist grottoes carved into the side of a sandstone cliff, are a must. Built around 400 AD at a time of Buddhist revival, the caves were the first and grandest of the three major Buddhist grottoes, the other two being the Longmen Caves in Luoyang and the Mogao Caves in Gansu.
These are the best preserved, but prepare to be disappointed by their surroundings – the atmosphere has for years been blighted by nearby coal mines, and the benefits afforded by the recent addition of parkland have been eroded by a huge and even more recently built shopping mall. However, it’s still well worth the trip. Arranged in three clusters (east, central and west) and numbered east to west from 1 to 51, the caves originally spread across an area more than 15km long, though today just a kilometre-long fragment survives. If it’s spectacle you’re after, just wander at will, but to get an idea of the changes of style and the accumulation of influences, you need to move sequentially between the three clusters. The earliest group is caves 16–20, followed by 7, 8, 9 and 10, then 5, 6 and 11 – the last to be completed before the court moved to Luoyang. Then followed 4, 13, 14 and 15, with the caves at the eastern end – 1, 2 and 3 – and cave 21 in the west, carved last. Late August 2014 the Beijing Municipality Traffic Management Bureau http://www.bjjtgl.gov.cn launched a new campaign and enforces some regulations and restrictions to use motorbikes and tricycles within the 6th. Ring-Road of Capital City Beijing once again.

Been here before with the JL's 600 (solo / sidecar) but need to hike into the area from the road as deep sandy single tracks now and the MTS doesn't perform well on that particular terrain due to tyres... New development going on all around and that includes the area near Mission Hills Golf Course Haikou http://www.missionhillschina.com/en-US/haikou with a new China movie town: http://movietownhaikou.com/en-us/ and the Lan Kwai Fong Entertainment and hotel district: http://www.missionhillslkf.com/en-us/ Anyhow, finished my errands and meetings and next destination, the old part of Haikou. The police and traffic authorities enforced the motorbike riding ban all over downtown Haikou due to the annual BOAO Forum for Asia and took a mates car, nothing to proof anymore and avoiding lengthy arguments with a cop in China is best sometimes to enjoy the upcoming ride back South.... Haikou has two seaports for passenger and cargo service. Haikou New Port, formerly known as the Inner Harbour, is located on the southern side of the mouth of the Haidian River. Approximately 7km west of Haikou New Port is Haikou Xiuying Port. This port is considerably larger, and is the main distribution centre for cargo entering Hainan, and is also a major port for immigration onto Hainan Island. Out cruising the greater Beijing mountain regions.... Jiankou section of the Great Wall of China is located in the Huairou district 73km North of Beijing between the famous Mutianyu (ten kilometers to the east) and the Moshikou sections of the Great Wall of China. The Jiankou section of the wall was constructed in 1368 during the period of the Ming Dynasty. It is made of large light colored rocks which can be seen from a great distance. The small villages nearby have a few hostels so called "Folk Inns" and simple guesthouses for overnight stays to explore and hike the region, the most famous and popular one is called Zhou's Hostel located at Xizhazi village no.5 branch (40°27'54.3"N 116°30'43.6"E / phone: 010-6161-1762). The closest location rideable with a Ducati MTS is located just above a small village and farmhouse settlement and marks the start of the small rocky and very steep climbing trail to the Jiankou Wall section (40°27’54.4"N 116°31’53.8"E). ཨ༌མདོ Amdo is one of the three main regions of Tibet found in the northeast corner of the Tibetan Plateau. Amdo is home to approximately 25% of the total Tibetan population. Parts of Amdo lie in northern and eastern Qinghai, southwest Gansu and northern Sichuan. If you think of Tibet as rolling grasslands filled with yaks and nomads, the Amdo region is what you are thinking of. Langmusi (Tibetan = Taktsang Lhamo སྟག་ཚང་ལྷ་མོ་) is a small village straddling the provincial Gansu and Sichuan border in the Amdo Region of the Tibetan Plateau.
Sitting at approx. 3600m, Lhamo lies in a beautiful valley surrounded by alpine forests and amazing mountains. The town only has a population of around 4000, with more than 10% of the people belonging to the two monasteries located in the village. During Tibetan New Year (Losar ལོ་གསར་) and during other festivals throughout the year, many pilgrims can be found going to Lhamo from other areas in Amdo. These pilgrims often prostrate to the ground every three steps all the way to the monasteries. The journey for them can take several weeks or even months to complete. The town is home to Buddhists and Muslims, Tibetans and Huizu, government-backed monasteries, Tibetan-back monasteries, the Chinese military, nomadic herders, Tibetans on pilgrimages, and a splash of foreign and Chinese tourists. Mix all of that among a population of less than 5,000, and there you have Langmusi.... Kirti Monastery (Sichuan province side of the village with around 750 monks). Behind the monastery is a gorge with several old meditation caves. In Tibetan, “Taktsang” means “Tiger Cave” and a short hike behind Kirti Monastery will bring you to the caves for which the town is named. Hiking behind the monastery is one of the highlights of the area. Sertri Monastery (Gansu province side of the village with around 350 monks). It is the higher of the two Langmusi monasteries and sits in a less impressive setting than nearby Kerti Monastery. There is a pilgrimage Kora around Sertri. It is best to go in the morning as there are normally many Tibetan pilgrims also doing the Kora. If you follow the paved road past Sertri, it leads to several small villages home to Tibetan herders. Walk up past the left side of Serti Monastery (Langmusi), you’ll eventually come to a clearing near a hilltop to the site of a Tibetan tradition.
Sky burial (Tibetan: བྱ་གཏོར་, Wylie: bya gtor, lit. "bird-scattered" is a funeral practice in which a human corpse is placed on a mountaintop to decompose while exposing to the elements or to be eaten by scavenging animals, especially birds of prey. It is a specific type of the general practice of excarnation. It is practiced in the Chinese provinces of Tibet, Qinghai, Sichuan and Inner Mongolia, and in Mongolia proper. The locations of preparation and sky burial are understood in the Vajrayana Buddhist traditions as charnel grounds. Comparable practices are part of Zoroastrian burial practices where deceased are exposed to the elements and birds of prey on stone structures called Dakhma. Few such places remain operational today due to religious marginalisation, urbanisation and the decimation of vulture populations. The majority of Tibetan people and many Mongols adhere to Vajrayana Buddhism, which teaches the transmigration of spirits. There is no need to preserve the body, as it is now an empty vessel. Birds may eat it or nature may cause it to decompose. The function of the sky burial is simply to dispose of the remains in as generous a way as possible (the source of the practice's Tibetan name). In much of Tibet and Qinghai, the ground is too hard and rocky to dig a grave, and, due to the scarcity of fuel and timber, sky burials were typically more practical than the traditional Buddhist practice of cremation. Knowing your shit or knowing you're shit...... One my favourite life long sayings and makes me seriously smile once again while looking at all the Yak dung drying in the sun (Langmusi) like artwork to be used as a fuel source (open + closed fireplaces) by the Tibetan herdsmen / nomads.
When used as fuel source, the faeces are first dried. Faeces for this purpose is collected daily at the campsite at the end of the day's grazing or brought in from the range in the warm season. A stick wrapped in yak hair is used to cut the faeces into slices that are exposed to the sun for a day or longer on each side until dry. When fully dry, the faeces slices are stacked in heaps up to 2 m high and "painted" with fresh faeces to keep out rain. A drainage channel is often dug at the bottom of the heap to take away run-off water. If the heap is to be used up before the rainy season, it may not be painted. Langmusi changed a lot since my last visit during early May 2004 and the town is now full of touristy shops, restaurants, hotels and guesthouses, entry tickets required to the two monasteries (Sichuan / Gansu side of Langmusi).
They even laid cobblestones and asphalt onto the main road and quite a few new houses around, old days just one government owned and operated hotel and gravel / dirt tracks going through the simple monastery settlement.... Located in a parallel valley to Xiahe (Labrang), the Ganjia Grasslands (Gānjiā Cǎoyuán, 甘加草原) offer a glimpse into the lives of the semi-nomadic Tibetans living in the Amdo region. Unlike the Sangke Grasslands that lie closer to Xiahe (Labrang), the Ganjia Grasslands have yet to be turned into a commercial tourist attraction. Many denizens of the Ganjia Grasslands still keep to their traditional lifestyle herding yaks. During the chilly winters, many of them stay in mud-brick homes and head back to tent living during the warmer months. One of the real nice areas are near the so called White Rock Cliffs and the temples Tseway Gompa and Trakkar Gompa.

The Ganjia Grasslands are also home to the ancient walled Bajiao Village. Ancient, crumbling walls rise up from the dry scrub of the Ganjia Grasslands. Bajiao Village (Bājiǎo Chéng Yízhǐ, 八角城遗址), known as Karnang in Tibetan, is a roughly 2,000-year-old village surrounded by a 12-sided city wall that appears as a nearly perfect cross when viewed from above. Once an important point for traffic between Gansu and Qinghai, the city was fortified in this unique cross shape rather than a square. The distance between the corners of each wall were intended to be short enough to be within the range of crossbows fired from atop the wall, making the town easier to defend. Traces of the moat, once another part of the town's defences, also still remain.

The Norden Camp is an opportunity for the visitor to experience Tibetan culture and outdoors in style and comfort. It is situated 20 minutes out of Labrang, the famous Tibetan monastic town in the Tibetan Autonomous Kenlho Prefecture, Gansu Province, China. The site, a winter grazing area for local nomads is a stunningly beautiful area that covers 11 hectares, borders a meandering river and is the home of hares and marmots, foxes, gazelles, many birds including pheasants. The camp is covered in flowering bushes, trees, and a carpet of flowers in summer. From May, the flowering plants and bushes bloom in stages; pink, then yellow and multi colored flowers that continue to bloom into October. For Tibetans, jewelry plays an important, traditional role in dress, spirituality, and life. Tibet is a Buddhist nation, which is reflected strongly in its jewelry. Tibetans use jewelry as a means to keep them close to deities. Jewelry protects as well, having amulet properties. In contrast with India, where a piece of jewelry is valued for the preciousness of the metals and gems that go into making it, Tibetans value their jewelry based on its color, size and symbolism.Tibetan silver jewelry has a rustic, almost unfinished look to it. In contrast with the perfectly symmetrical and flawless appearance of, say Italian silver jewelry, Tibetan silver pieces are individually made in a process that usually involves hammering and chiseling. No one will ever confuse Tibetan jewelry as having been machine mass produced, and herein lies its simple beauty! Tibetan jewelry, including silver and gold jewelry, also tends to be much larger in size than the jewelry made in most other countries and regions. As for materials, Tibetan jewelry is usually made of copper or silver, although gold jewelry is also produced.Tibetan jewelry also makes extensive use of gemstones. Of course, turquoise and coral are favorites, but rubies, sapphires, agates, coral, amber, copal, carnelian, garnet, lapis lazuli, amethyst, and jade are also used. Labrang Monastery...
Established during 1709, Labrang had approx. 4000 monks during its peak times but now only has around 1500 monks. Labrang is considered the cultural heart of Amdo Tibetan culture along with nearby town of Rebkong. Labrang is one of the “Great Six” Gelukpa sect monasteries of Tibetan Buddhism. Large quiet courtyards, bright awnings flapping lazily in the gentle breeze; dark halls and temples, blood red columns and dimly gleaming gods occasionally incandescent in shafts of light; the buzz of monks in prayer. A huge golden stupa, glowing above the flat roofs, dominated the town from a hillside across the river where we sat and contemplated the scene. High above, sharp ridges, sawed away at a cloudless sky. Like all sacred Tibetan sites, Labrang has a Kora, a sacred path winding for over 3 kms around it, and this was the first part of our walk. Starting from the western end of the main street, walking clockwise as custom requires. As always, there was a throng of pilgrims on the path, mainly from the Amdo region, the surrounding area of the Tibetan Plateau. All wore the traditional blanket-coat, mostly off one shoulder or even off altogether, arms and “upper” hanging limply from the waistband. Mothers, faces burned dark brown by the relentless sun and wind and already heavily lined, padded along patiently, stooped under heavy packs, snot-nosed children trailing from each arm.Great chunks of coral and turquoise hung from heavy silver chains in their long, delicately braided hair or from their necks. Tiny, wizened grannies, almost bent double, heavy ropes of grey hair hanging down their backs, shuffled along, beady miss-nothing eyes assessing everything about us as we tramped past. Their taller menfolk staggered in front of them, braided hair hanging below wide-brimmed felt hats, knives in their belts, curly-toed leather boots scuffing the dusty path.
