i guess i had so little trouble, because i spent only about 2% of my time in any big cities.
Quite possible. But there are many factors that can happen that can make your ride/drive through China a success or fail.

Each time some westerner does something stupid(not saying you did something stupid) in China it puts a focus on all westerners in China. I remember a few years back there was westerner think he was Russian or European? he had a conflict on a train with a Chinese woman someone filmed it on there smart phone and it went viral and was on all the TV news then another westerner did something stupid in the same week and then there was all of a sudden alot of distrust of westerners in China. A small minority spoil it for all. If westerners were riding through China then unregistered no plates no licence you would find no sympathy from the police.

i remember another time a westerner who was either riding his Ebike or scooter in a rather large city and had an accident with a pedestrian and as always a crowd gathers to watch the commotion. He said it was her fault and she was trying to milk him of money. The crowd supported him and turned on her until someone with a smart phone who had filmed the incident and it showed he hit her. Then the crowd turned on him.He was deported.

Sometimes your lucky sometimes your not.

I see China is opening up more on International tourism into China and they are going to build a base camp on the Chinese side of Everest so climbers can climb the Chinese side that's a really dangerous climb the Chinese side so who knows they may start to relax driving in China for foreigners into the future. I have seen reports on CCTV of foreigners coming into Xinjiang from the others countries and they are now pushing for more tourism in Xinjiang but hey China being China who knows.

Single-handed you probably did go to some places that no westerner has ever been but this guy had access to parts of China in the 50's that many many could not and he took alot of photo's John B Turner: Time Exposure

Their is some photos in there of Buddhists worshiping at the big temple Peking 2500th anniversary of attainment of Buddha of nirvana.

Hey Single-handed may I suggest for your next trip in China one of the most awe inspiring roads in the world. Start at Kashgar take the G314( they are building a new highway into Pakistan at the moment might be finished now so no not much vehicles on the old road) stop at Tashkurgan check out the stone fort 1000's year old continue up and pass the border 4500mtr from memory into Pakistan to Sost take some time in the Hunza valley seeing as you like mountains. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LZIEmS8TOgU although I just heard Xinjiang govt is now clamping down on that border crossing.

bigdamo 12 Jan 2017 05:50

Oh forgot do a little detour before Taskurgan and go check out Muztagh ata 7500mtr you can stay at the lake base of Muztagh with the locals in a yurt in your budget range including meals.Take your high altitude medication with you.

Single-handed you may have some problems getting your Chinese bike back into China if you take it across the border into Pakistan.

The link has nothing to do with Chinese plated bikes with the rider having a correct Visa with all the correct documents to entry China legally and is more do with........

BEIJING: The head of the Xinjiang government was quoted by the official Xinuha news agency as saying that security along the China-Pakistan border would be further tightened "to prevent terrorists from entering or leaving the region illegally in 2017
