2 Belgian Friends From LA to PANAMA on a KLR

Introducing you Stijn and Joeri, 2 friends. 2 bikes, a 6 months adventure.

The time has come to start our first post of many to follow. The 15th of April we are leaving Brussels, Belgium for Los Angeles, USA. After touring the USA for 1 month we dive into Baja, Mexico. After Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Belize, Nica, and Costa Rica will folow. No big plans yet, no routes, except a few things we must see and a good preparation. We like to see and drive where people, places, moments, guide us.

I'm Driving a KLR, who's waiting for me in Santa Monica:mchappy:. Joeri will shop and see in LA.

I've enjoyed so much hours and weeks on Horizon till now. And got great info, so thanks! Thank GOD this site is here... Mollydog, nice info :thumbup1: So i'll try to give back as much as possible here on the HUBB. We also have a blogsite called adroad.tv (online soon) where you can find posts of ideas, architecture, art, fun, food, ideas we see on the road.

As we evolve in our trip, and drive to unknow places we would love to see you guys here with your advice on beautyfull roads, people, places, safety, dive spots and all kinds of little tips and tricks. Hope to get a lot of nice pictures on here as well for you to enjoy!!!

Only a few weeks to go, you can expect a full post of the bike preparation soon. Help, workshop, story's in LA are welcome while preping ourselves and the bikes in the first few weeks. W'll be staying somewhere in Santa Monica. After LA, we for now have got San Fransico, Yosemite, Roswell, Las Vegas on our To do List ?c?

Share your roads with us!!!

safety concerns

As i read the info of the Belgian authority's: Honduras, Guatemala, El Salavador, Belize and Mexico are some of the most dangerous country's in the world right now :innocent:. However people get robbed, atacked in Brussels evryday as well and reading Horizon tells me this should be alright, we are open, speak spanish and we dont look up dangerous situations. Only concern is to get robbed or driven off the road.

Any advice on how to stay low? witch roades/areas to avoid right now in these countries?

Thanks,
Stijn

Sony handycam

In my free time i'm a vj and i would love to capture all my rides to use them chopd up afterwards.

Anyone has some experience on mounting a Sony handycam onto a KLR?
I know the RAM mounting system, but i would like to do some transforming to the plastic lamp frame, so i can hide the camera in there for theft and protect the lens with a little plexi glass. It has a 40gb internal storage, good for 30 hours recording.

Some advice?

My wife and I rented a car in Cancun Mexico and drove into and around Belize with no problems whatsoever in November 08. Even Belize city was OK at nite (with a car). We never traveled at nite on the highway. We had never experienced a border crossing with a vehicle and got one of the many helpers to show us through. I will get someone at all borders I think. I paid helper fees of $10 us on th mexican side and $5 us on the Belize side. Could have got away with less I am sure but I was a newby.
In january 09 we went through Costa Rica again with a car . No problems again. Got stopped at the roadside checks along with everyone else and made a deal with a local highway traffic person but I was doing double the speedlimit and was the first in line. My own fault for being in front of a long line of Mario Andreties.
Never had a problem in Mexico either. Have fun guys. I am planning a trip through central and south america next year. Just discovered this site.
Totally awsome.

Ola Stijn,

We're on our way on 2 KLR's from San Ffrancisco to South America. As you probally noticed the road conditions in Mexico aren't that bad at all. I think the E17 has more putholes than the routes here.
Maby we see each other along the road.

Have fun.
