Have anybody been to Poland? How was it?
 

I am planning to go on bike to Poland, but I am a littlbe bit afraid. Have anybody been to Poland? How was it?

I passed through recently. Absolutely nothing to be afraid of. I was in Krakow - lovely city and good value. Some nice hilly bits in the south where i was, but lots of trucks to hard to ride freely. Motorways were in excellent condition but quite a few toll booths.

What are your concerns?

I was there last week on my bike. Good quality road network; with friendly, very proud people.

I visited: The High Tatras ~~> Wieliczka Salt Mine ~~> Auschwitz-Birkenau ~~> city of Wroclaw.

Don't worry, Poland is a well-organised, fully developed European country .. and I can't wait to go back there this September.

I've been to Poland about six or seven times over the years. What you will find is really friendly, helpful people and a country that is developing rapidly in to a western European state. The main sights for tourists are either in the far south or the far north, the central band from perhaps Lodz up to Torun is flat and not very interesting, Warsaw is a dump (a commonly held opinion amongst my Polish friends too). In the south you have Krakow, Auschwitz and the Zakopane valley, all have become too touristy over the years, I feel. I far prefer the northern Baltic coast. Do a bit of research on Gdansk, Sopot, Malbork and the Masurian Lake District and you won't be disappointed.

+1 re that, it's a cracking country with an expanding biker scene. The area around the lakes region is fabulous and if the weather is hot then it's flip flop time. There are some cracking roads to be ridden and the place is full,of history and it's near the Czech Republic which is also fantastic for bikes too. One of my favourite places and if you are single then what are you waiting for??? Oh and the zubrovka is dirt cheap,in the local off licences. Don't worry about the driving, I found the drivers to be pretty good, I only had two incidences in all the times I have been there,, one was a misunderstanding, we both gave way at the same time, the other was a pissed driver which made me laugh so much I didn't look where I was going :blushing:

No danger, there's even Tescos there.

You might experience deep rutting/tramlines on some tarmac roads caused by a combination of thin tarmac, hot summer sun and heavy trucks. Worrying at first but you get used to it.

Agree with the statement about interesting north and south, though I also visited the middle as I was exploring POW camps around Torun/Grudziadza (Thorn/Graudenz) that my father-in-law stayed in.

In the north I particularly enjoyed riding alongside the Elblag Canal, one of the seven wonders of Poland, and watching the water-powered boat lifts taking vessels up the hills.

If you are going to visit the lakes in the summer months, take industrial-strength insect repellent.

Poland is just like any other european country: Very zililized and nothing to worry about.
