How big a lens?

I use a Manfrotto 714SHB for my lighter P&S cameras but it also handled a Canon D30 with a 200 mm lens without issues.

The Manfrotto 715SHB is identical but comes with a Quick Release plate.

Zero issues in over 3 years of use, very compact at 35 cm, yet it extends to 121 cm. It is the best tripod I've come across.

I've got the Manfrotto 055 Nat3

The 055 range is similar to the 190, but bears a slightly heavier weight. it is heavier too.
Legs open horizontally, but center column doesnt have a separate section to get it lower to the ground this you will have to buy. NAT version is green.

The Americans will tell you that Gitzo's are much better than manfrotto, but I havent heard much either way, and certainly the after sales service from Gitzo in the UK, in my experience was fairly inept, whilst Manfrotto is great.

As for keeping the tripod down in those gusts, a simple rule of thumb, dont let go of it when its upright. Have you tried the neck strap as a foot hold, so you pull it down, or failing that guy ropes for a more fixed position.

I am a supporter of the Carbon fiber tri pods or Basalt ones, anything to make them lighter. My next Tripod will be carbon fiber, but at the moment I just carry!

Velbon have a range of super lightweight tripods that are actually quite good I think the MAXI range they can support a surprisingly large camera and are very very light weight.

As for heads,
Manfrotto have a 141RC head which I am fairly attached to and works for me, their newer smaller head is also good. With these you can lock down one of the three adjusters and have 3 dimensional control without the flopping.
But really just cough up, get a Gymbal head and get it over with!

A cheap alternative to Gitzo's carbon fibre tribods: Benro. Made in China, carbon fibre. They do various sizes. Good bang for the buck if weight is an issue.
