storing images/videaos on the go - photo hosting websites??

hello. im a pretty computer illiterate type of person, and am looking for a way of storing images and videos whilst travelling for a few months in west africa. at the moment i am considering a cheep tablet/laptop to store the images on or transfer them to a memory stick. i also wondered about getting a card reader and using a photo hosting website - how do these work and are there any that are better than others? my other option would be to buy a load of sd cards and just fill them up. both my camera and video camera will have screens, so i can edit stuff as i go along. any thoughts/experiences on any of this?

cheers,
karl

Stick with the idea of memory cards. Uploading can be somewhat of a problem since internet is mostly too slow. Good picture and video site is Flickr. Personally i would never use any of my memorysticks in a internet cafe. Too many bugs and viruses out there. Use Wlan if u can.
Enjoy.

Hi Karl,

if you're not computer savvy then I reckon the use of memory cards really makes sense. They're cheap, take up no space at all and you can then concentrate on the journey, rather than looking for places to download your work.

Also, if you keep a diary, you can add the image numbers to your entries, so when you're home, you won't forget where they were taken!

If course, once you're home, you can then re-run the whole holiday, as you decide which images to keep etc, so it's double the fun!

Also it's good practice to 'zoom in' on the images, during your trip, so you can check for any contamination to the lens or CCD, afterall there's nothing worse than getting a large blob of dust in there and finding, once you're home, that every image is affected by the same mark.

Regards

Reggie

how much storage capacity do you need?

Hi Karl,

How much storage capacity do you need, and do you want to make a back-up of all your files?

To give you an example (=my own solution for 12 months on the road):

- 50 pictures max per day = 50*30mb*365= 0,5 terabyte
- say that I convert 5 of these to TIFF and JPG daily = 5*170mb*365= 0,3 tb
- average 5 min of video daily = 5*120*365= 0,2 tb

Adds up to at least 1 terabyte, and 2 tb if you back-up all files (which I certainly would do if I were you).

I use a few mobile hard disks (Western Digital), very compact and light weight.
Of course you would need to carry a small notebook or laptop as well:(

Hope this helps.

Happy travels,

Gee

That's what I do. Have two one tb Stand alone hard drive. Just plug it in to your note book. Save across all file's. I plug mine in to the main's some place and leave it over night. In the morning every thing is on the hard drive. Then clean off the note book ready to fill up. Plugging it in to the main's over night, save's the note book running out of juice. And it's fully charged ready to go the next day. You can get a 1 tb drive for round £80. A lot cheaper then a load of sd card's.

I think what you are looking for is a portable photo storage bank

Have a look at this go to:::http://www.amazon.co.uk/Smartdisk-Ph.../dp/B000FAM7PQ.

If you are travelling and with plenty of knocks then look for a solid state storage rather than HD as they can fail where as solid state has no moving parts so should survive a hard life.
The last resort is to use multiple memory cards as other members have suggested although they can get lost easily due to there small size.
