mavica cd200 question

Hey,

I own a sony mavica cd200 and have the following problem:

When my cd-rw is full, I delete some pictures, but the space does not free up! unless I format the disc I never get any space back. why is that?

Jeremy Andrews 13 May 2002 03:19

At the risk of being shot for qiving an idiot answer, that's a fact of life with CD-RW's. I too was surprised that space didn't free up on my Mavica 300, but believe it or not , this is described somewhere in the manual.

In effect, by deleting shots, all you are doing is editing, without creating space. I guess the only advantage is faster viewing of your disk without looking through unwanted shops...

If you are using non Sony disks, you have to therefore be careful to leave enough room to finalise that disk before you have no space left. Somehow the sony disks build in a function to ensure this.

Still a great camera though eh...

I thought only CD-R discs were supposed to act this way. This is totally stupid!

Hi,

I agree with Ykarj.
I have a CD2000 and got myself a big box of CD-rw's. Even though they have the problem that they can only be read in a modern (multi read) CD-player, I choose them so I would be able to save space deleting the garbage.
If this would not give back space... I made a bad choice. I'll test it.
I know the CD-r has this "problem"... You can delete but do not get the space back.
The CD-rw should give the space back.
I'll do some experimenting and post the result here...

Hi again,

I registered with a useful looking Mavica users forum : http://www.mavican.nu

I took the liberty of posting this question to see if it can be answered.

Cheers

Jeremy

Hi Guy's

Bad news... After doing some experimenting and reading the manual (the small print) I discovered the folowing:

Only if you delete the last picture you will get the space back. After deleting the last picture this works again, you can delete the last picture and get the space back.

This is bad, but there is more: If you have opened the camera or altered any picture (resize, rotate, whatever) even delting the last picture does not give back the space.

Conclusion: (mine anyway) Using CD-rw's is useless unless you decide right away if you want to keep the picture you made. Taking in consideration the disadvantage of the CD-rw (can only be read in a multi-sesion reader) I guess I'll be using the CD-r.

I must say I am pretty disapointed by this. My idea was to look at the picture's in the evening and decide what to keep... Now there is no use for that anymore.

Anyway... I am glad I know this now.

Hi guys,

The bulletin board from www.Mavican.nu came back with the same information. So yes, those evening editing ideas have gone out the window. The only remaining advantage of CD-RW's is that they can be re-formatted to use again. What I've done is take the oppurtunity to burn 4 disks onto a regular sized CD-R, and then a I can re-use my disks. This also provides some security against losing your images. I.e., you can burn two copies, take one with you, and post the other home.

Hai Guy's

Just a thought:

CD-r's are more reliable then CD-rw's
CD-r's can be bought for less then a euro a piece, CD-rw cost 10 times that amount (if you are lucky)
A CD-rd can be used somewhere around 100 time's (but it will fail at one point)

My conclusion:
I just bought 50 CD-r's for 77 cent's (euro) a piece. I'll bring back my CD-rw's and keep one or two as spare.

A last thought....

The theory on CR-r's is fine, but if you are looking to update a website regularly, the cd-rw is the only option which lets you finalise then unfinalise again.

All depends on how many photos you take I guess...

mmaarten 4 Jun 2002 12:51

Again I did some testing and came up with a briliant result.

When you finalize a CD-r and want to use it again to take more picture....
You DON'T need to unfinalize it!!!
Just put it back in the camera and it's ready to shoot.

And... Yes, after finalize it again, also the previous picture's are on it.

Only drawback: Finalizing cost about 10 Mb of space, you dont't get it back. But for 1 euro a piece (185 Mb) who care's.

Well I´ll be Harley rider on a rough road during a snowstorm....

If that´s true what you can do with a CD-r, then I´ll just have to get meeself sum...

Good news indeed !
