Cairo to Capetown

I've recently come across a web site about a couple cycling from Cairo to Capetown.
What I'm wondering about is the amount of kit they're taking. Is it normal to have 30 inner tubes, 5 spare chains, and (I think) 12 extra tyres?
Have I read it wrong?

Yes, does seem a bit excessive. Where will they put it all?

Why not get bikes with 28" wheels, plenty of those in Africa, so you could buy tires locally?

I think you read it correct. Can only hope they plan to ship items ahead.

Unless they're doing it long way down style and have a support crew -???

You'd never take along all that gear!!

Thanks

I did wonder what they'll do with all that stuff.

u read it wrong -

they have a support crew - its a race of sorts.. plus on 2 chains "smile" not that this matters! :stormy:

cheers

We have seen a lot of people comment on what we are taking in forums, but you have to remember…this is a supported race. We are not travelling slowly. We have the luxury to have support trucks to store gear on. If we were travelling solo, we would not be taking near as much, but we are packing for speed and efficiency.

I couldn't now swear blind to it, but I'm certain that at the time I read it there was no mention of support vehicles, plus the comment about " We have seen a lot of people comment on what we are taking in forums" means it was not just me.

But anyway, the question is resolved.

I think your right, I read it near the time you first posted it, don't remember any mention of support.
Again, couldn't swear on it.

Yep, thanks.

no worries - I was really meaning to type about the cost! Did u check out the cost?? $$$ 7,900 euros.. plus $1000 + whatever you do extra... but then a again it's some 4 months.. supported..

If I was going alone guess in US $$$ that would take me a long way in Africa by pedels! Maybe I would get to Mongolia/China as well! :innocent:
