want to install steel panniers on old xj

i have a 1982 yamaha xj 750 and want to install a set of steel panniers on it.
i have searched the net and have not found any kit that would fit the bike.
do they make any universal brackets or will i have to fabricate it myself.i know from searching old photos of xj's they were used as police bikes in n.z.they had hardcases.can i get a set of mounts from them if any still exsist???
if anyone can help me on his topic i would greatly appricate it...thanks.

After reading the posts on home made panniers,i think i too will tinker with making my own panniers. Now the question is should i just make the mounts myself and buy a set of used panniers or attempt to fabricate my own.
Any sugesstions would be helpful.

It all depends upon your level of skill and what workshop facilities you have .
You can make make "mock ups" out of cardboard and experiment with different shapes until you get exactly what you want .Then make them out of aluminum and weld or rivet them together .
If you don't have the facilities available ,one alternative might be to use Pelican cases and make up a simple framework to hold them .

Hey Dodger thanks for the info on the home made panniers.I think i'm going to give it a go.I like the idea about carboard mock ups.
once again,thanks..

Just been making my own panniers. What an ass ach.
Look at some army ammunition boxes at army surplus stores. For £10 you have your pannier. Then battle like me to fix it to your bike frame. I have posted some threads on panniers recently. check them out

Thanks Orrin,do the ammo boxes have a lockable top or will i have to fab a lock system?Let me know because that idea sounds so much easier and cheaper...

I am in the process of putting two ammo boxes on my @,I have some pictures on the xrv.org.uk web site, just go to the picture gallery and type in pannier racks you will see pictures of the ammo boxes and the tube I used.
