Vlad to Anchorage!!!!!!

Vladivostok Air - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

International scheduled destinations: Anchorage [begins April 2008]

Okay, so it's just a wikipedia link - but if it's true this may open up a few routes without having to go via Korea/Japan.

The anchorage agents have quoted $1200 to get me across to the US - they're going to get back to me about the $$$ for the bike.

I also emailed Air Vlad to be on the safe side (I'm quite paranoid at times...!) and they say that, "there is no time-table and
fares for this flight. The information will appear in February 2008".

Brilliant - the US Will let me book a flight that doesn't exist. I wonder if that contract would be binding and they would therefore be obligated to get me to the US if Air Vlad pulled out.......

;o)

Sh!t - that's £10 / KG for a 2,000 KG W140 S Class!
Sounds more like an excess baggage rate than a freight rate.
And I think you need to speak to an organisation that ships cars from Japan to the USA and get their opinion. £20,000 sounds very much like they are extracting the urine.
I was figuring around £5,000 as being a reasonably bearable cost but that was just me guessing. Shipping containers are cheaper but then you lose the car for so long as it takes only a day to fly yourself.
Did you ask these people in the UK for an opinion Import and export car shipping by air freight from RJJ the car shipping specialist ?
Thanks for the information and progress report.

kinvig , please let me know as well when you have some news on it. I've talked to Olga?! in Anchorage and she told me 1190$ to Anchorage and the same for the bike.. doesn't know anything. She said the flights will start on the 7th of June.

I'm planning on arriving in Eastern Russia in midd July. (I'll come through Turkey, Iran, Stans, Mongolia) What's your route? Maybe we can do a part together.

East Russia to Alaska Flights

Maguest,

Two of us are planning a very similar route to yours this summer: Turkey, Iran, Stans, Russia. We hope to be in Vlad in mid-Aug and then fly to Alaska.

Latest Air Vlad news was flights start in July 2008, but of course nothing is ever certain.

Ha, ha, if we get any more people on this HUBB we should charter a flight out of Anchorage.

Cheers, Mike

I've not heard any more from Brant yet.

I'll emailed him again on 27th Feb, but he's not responded. Is no news good news?

kinvig 10 Mar 2008 18:39

"We do have the schedule and basic pricing on our website and are able to book now. www.itcalaska.com"

They want dimesions/weight of bike to be able to get a quote for that too.

Thanks for the heads up Dirk. Talked to Brant. Looks like there's a few us waiting to find out if they'll take bikes. Fingers crossed.

Cheers, Mike

It looks like we're gonna be holding a 'Hubb Meeting' in Vlad around mid August. We should arrive early August (HT Leads Crossed). If no 'flight' option,.. then looking at Ferry to Japan and an extra adventure in the land of the Rising Sun (and hopefully 'Falling yen' to pay for it)

kinvig 25 Mar 2008 19:12

I've just spoken to Brant.

He hasn't heard a reply from the emails he has sent to his contact in Vlad Air.

He say's he'll email me as soon as he finds something out.

He suggested going via South Korea to Seattle. Per person that's looking at around $1400 inc taxes, not including bike.

from Brant:

Please seethe comment below from our cargo manager;

Its possible to ship motorbike as CARGO from VVO to ANC. And XF cargo agent in VVO can arrange everything.
Motorbike – is Dangerous cargo (class 9), heavy cargo and oversized cargo, so some extra coefficients to be applied to a basic cargo tariff.
Also bike must be prepared before transportation by cargo agent on VVO (partial disassembling is necessary).
Crates are available in VVO (and its not free, of course..)
Also there are some custom issues, to be solved in advance in VVO (flight VVO-PKC – domestic flight, PKC-ANC – international).
Roughly estimated, the above cargo will be around USD 5,500,
but please wait the final price and the final condition by June

This is a help but the same problem exists with Petropavlosk - how to get there!

Petrovpavlosk is in/on Kamchatka, a very isolated peninsula with access only by sea or air. There are no road/tracks from 'mainland' Russia although once there roads/tracks exist between the few towns. I am told specially equipped vehicles 'could possibly' get there overland in winter when everything is frozen hard. To do this one has to cross great distances and vast empty areas of Siberia to approach from the north.
A ferrry from Magadan, if there is one, looks a better bet.

See the current thread
http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/hub...t-russia-34111

The area used to be a 'forbidden area', reserved purely for military, apart from the few indidiginous peoples. This has eased in recent times - but not in peoples attitudes even if in law.

I am in Russia right now and, by coincidence yesterday before this thread mentioned it, I bought the best atlas/map of the area available (1:50,000 2004 edition - probably the latest). This shows no tracks at all for thousands of miles across northern Siberia. There are no contours shown, but the many relatively short rivers on the isthmuth from the north suggest high mountains. The whole peninsular is full of active volcanoes, hot geysers and earthquakes occur daily. A very, very hard journey. Anyone up for it?

If anyone wants, I will look elsewhere for more atlas/maps (mine was the last in the shop) and send them (or photocopies) when back in London later next week. Only the cost of a beer!

PM your details and let me know before late tuesday at the very latest if I am to go shopping.
Tony.

Hi,

I'm still looking into options on shipping my bike from Vladivostok or Pusan or Seoul to Anchorage. I didn't get anywhere by now. Anybody has any news, quotations, anything? I believe I will end up in Vladivostok, go to some tourist agency/airport/whatever and ask if they can ship my bike and myself. It's not the most appealing idea but again, no news from anywhere. Anybody has received a quotation?

Regards,
Dan
