Ulanbaatar to Ereentsav road

We'll be going on this road next week to cross back into Russia. It looks as though the road is tarmac as far as Ondorkhaan. Does anybody know the state of the road through to Choibalsan and on to Ereentsav? Just for info, we're in a 79 Series Landcruiser.

TIA

From Ondoorhaan to Choibalsan is wide fast packed earth.

From Choibalsan to Ereentsav is mostly double track path thru the grasslands.

When we used this route last year in our Toyota 4runner it was difficult to find the right track after Choibalsan, but we used the train track as a marker. You can't believe it's a main road but it is very quiet at the crossing into Russia. Good luck.

Thanks both for your replies. Delay has been due to being on the track and we're now in Chernishevsk in Russia.

There have been some changes on the section from Ondorkhaan to Choibalsan. After leaving Ondorkhaan we thought the road looked very unused and difficult to follow as at many junctions there was no obvious "main" road. In fact, from Ondorkhaan until about 40km from Choibalsan we saw one vehicle going the other way and a couple of trucks and motorbikes from the gers. The track itself has deteriorated in many places and is deeply eroded with few fast sections (at least in a Land Cruiser). I can only assume that that the road via Baruun Urt to UB has been paved and everybody is going this way even though it's longer.

This part of the track was quite challenging for us and felt very remote. Bikers would probably enjoy it.

The section from Choibalsan had the direction finding difficulties mentioned but following the railway was our answer too. It's also very remote and once we got about 25km from Choibalsan we saw only 2 other vehicles. One was coming from the border and confirmed we were on the right road. The other was a local minibus about 40km from Ereentsav. The state of the track was very bad in places so, again, a bit of a challenge
