Russian Consulates being Russian...

Its known to be difficult, not impossible. If you must get it there, you will have to get your letter of inviation from the agency the consular officers prefer to ensure a smooth, but not timely request.

Your best bet is to have a multiple entry visa before you arrive in UB...I got mine in Uzbekistan...same day, once the LOI was available...

Ask David for StanTours for the best place based on your travels...he can provide an LOI...

Agreed, MUCH better to get a multiple-entry visa before you arrive in UB.

If you have to do it in UB your best (only?) chance is to go through a local travel agency that can promise to smooth the way. Without that it's almost impossible. Ask around in UB to see which agency is currently best to use. It will cost you $$$.

transit

A friend got a 5-day transit visa in UB last year.
She exited the west side of Mongolia and entered Kazakhstan a few days later.
A visa for Kazakhstan was required as a condition for getting the transit visa.
Note that it may not be this easy for everyone. A Japanese girl riding solo may have just been interesting enough for the consul to give her a visa...

Her nationality might have played a part...
IMO...the Japanese may have the best passport to acquire visas with!

Oh and 5 day visa isn't a good idea...a lot of things can go wrong...and you will get screwed($$$$s) if you miss the date.
