Turkmenistan - anyone?

Now that my transit visa has just been scuppered (see post on advisories section)- and I am having to get a tourist visa after all - does anyone want to join forces - as it's cheaper the more people who go - plus how weird am I going to look being a tour group of just one person!

So no mates Norma says who else is or might be heading Eastwards? I'll be in Azerbaijan waiting to get the ferry from late May onwards - could stretch it until 15th June possibly - I'll just spend a bit more time in Georgia sampling the lovely wines:Beach:.

And - why is it so quiet in here is everyone else on the road already?

avoid it

again see my latest blog post, but I reckon you are better off avoiding the place and focussing on Uzbekistan.

I have just gone over the top of the Caspian sea from Dagestan round to Khwarezm / Uzbekistan and while there are about 3 boring days in there between Elista and Beyneu, the route is interesting and the border crossings quick and efficient.

Are you committed to that route south of the Caucasus?

Don't know if this helps, but: I got my transit visa for Turkmenistan from the Embassy in Vienna/Austria. Very friendly guy there (I think he's called Mr Madelan).
I didn't even go there myself. I just posted my passport to them via DHL and my travel-partner picked it up en-route. (BTW: I'm German, my travel-partner is British).

what next...

If anyone does want to travel to Turkmenistan I have some of the tour details and it is quite a reasonable price.

Bjorn, I´m not sure about leaving the visa to get on the way as I need to keep moving now (using the second passport in London trick) also I have had problems in the past - ie they often don´t seem to like giving them out to women on their own as they seem to feel responsible for me and give me a lecture and or say no:nono:

colebatch - not too much choice for me as my Kazakh and Russian visas don´t start in time. anyway, I´m looking forward to Turkmenistan (she says, putting on a brave face!)
