Azerbaijan land and sea borders are closed with no prospect of reopening in the near future. Most people heading east go via Turkey > Georgia > Russia.

There is no problem travelling through Russia but you will need to get a visa in advance (NOT evisa) and take enough cash for your time in the country as western cards don't work there.

Iran is another possibility but they require CDP and are not friendly to all nationalities just now.

Theoreticly yes.
BUT: You need a cargo company to bring your vehicle in, and you need to fly in by yourself with a plane, otherwise you cannot cross the landborders.

It is possible, but time consumpting and expensive.

Better and easyer is to take the route through Russia

Which border you suggest from Russia to kazakistan ? I heard just few days ago that the road/ Border to Qaraqualpakstan/Nukus is closed to vehicle under 35 QTL weight ... this means Bikes have to pass with a long journey to Baikonur... Have anybody heard about this?
Many Tks !

Unfortunately there is no news of the reopening of the Tejen border. This means you will have to take a much longer route Astrakhan > Aktobe > Shymkent 2500 kms. The Tejen border "may" reopen in September.

Karakalpakstan border KZ-UZ

Hi there-

I planned to take that border (Beyneu-Karakalpakstan) on my trip to Central Asia next year (2026). This post on HUBB is the only one i found saying that this special border post is closed to vehicles under 3.5 ton (equals 35QTL??) = motorbikes.

- where did you get that information from? Couldn't find info on i.e.caravanistan forum nor elsewhere that transit is limited.

- In case this info is true - is everyone really doing the deviation Atyrau-Aktöbe-Shymkent or is there another possibility to cross into UZ there? Train, truck etc?

Thanks
Karin

First result on Google search: https://central-asia.guide/tanzhen-b...eptember-2025/

I had to do the long route last month, Shymkent-Aral-Aktobe-Atyrau. Next year you should be OK, though border closures seem to be the norm rather than the exception in that part of the world.

After some more searching, I also found this article. Funny though there is so little being written about it in any forum, although its one of the most important gates to central asia at the moment.

I also found somewhere (can't remember where) a post from a motorcyclist who drove along the railwaytracks to Yushnoe/Bozoy and then along the northern shore of the Lake Aral to Sekseul and Aralsk. Took him 2 days on a Royal Enfield Bullet - the track can't be too bad then. Aparently there is fuel at Bozoy.

In case the borderpost is still undergoing renovation next year, I'll do that.

Cheers k

2nd-hand Information: Alternative road Beyneu-Aralsk

I keep looking for the post - I think it was on Caravanistan Forum in a most unlikely subforum - but haven't found it :(

The guy from the post said that the road along the railway tracks to Bozoy was hardpacked earth and easy to ride, fuel available in Bozoy - but the road from Bozoy to Begimbet was very sandy and he would advise to go directly to Saksaul.

I now zoomed into my navigation (Scenic) around Beyneu and I found a tack called Beyneu-Bozoy Road along the railwaytrack, a Bozoy-Saksaul Road and a Bozoy-Begimbet-Shalkar Road which remains in the vicinity of the railway.

My navigation also says (no guarantee!) that there is fuel in Bozoy,Begimbet and Saksaul and the track is 620km long.

Ride safely
k

Current crossing into Kazakhstan seems doable only (alas) through russia for your case.

1. Check the news. Kazakhstan is to open new ferry crossings with Azerbaijan somewhere in September 2025. Maybe it has to do something with the entering Azerbaijan as well
2. Currently the only way to reach Uzbekistan for private transport is Bozoy or Kaplanbek. Zhybek Zholy border point should be reopened somewhere soon, we have to check the news

And how to you get on the ferry in Aserbaidschan?
As the landborders are closed, you have to fly in, as I already postet.

Or do you know a better way?

Bozoy? There is a crossing point at Konysbayeva. I did it this year and it's vehicles only. That's an advantage because Kaplanbek is currently handling all the foot traffic that used to go through Zhibek Zholy and it's hell.
