Trans Siberian Maps

Just a note to let people know. I was in Stanfords, Covent Garden, London, UK yesterday to get some roadmaps and had a scan through the Russian section.

The russian map selection is greatly improved, although horrendously expensive compared to getting the maps in Russia. Hard cover road atlases are about double the russian price, but 'oblast' and 'krai' booklet maps are over 5x russian price.

There are good road maps of Irkutskaya, Chitinskaya, Amurskaya oblasts and Khabarovski, Primorski Krai's. These are booklets about A5 sized at scales of 1:200,000 for populated areas and 1:400,000 for other areas. The maps are topographical and show the parts you are likely to travel on (except one stretch between Mogocha (chitinskaya oblast) and Erofei Pavlovich (Amurskaya oblast) which isn't shown at all! These maps are generally 2002 - 2003 which is the best I've seen for this part of the road. The scale of 1:200,000 is useful, though I haven't compared them to the 1:400,000 older maps which I have (to see if the new ones are just enlarged or actually contain more information).
The "road" isn't shown between chernishevsk (Ch. Ob.) and Sivaki (Am. Ob.) though they're 2002 - 2003 and this is to be expected.
The road atlases are £22 ish and the booklets are £10 ish.

So, in the interests of fairness, Standfords are stocking some better maps nowadays, but there are only 1-3 copies on display of relevant maps, atlases and they are 'premium' priced.

Note: I did not specially look for any 'road of bones' maps so cannot comment.

Regards

Les

An alternative source of data for the 'road' is google earth. I got in early and installed the application. The satellite data of the new road is excellent. Am now investigating whether this can be integrated with gps satnav in any way.
