Pretty sure you can go via Azerbaijan instead. Others have gone that way this year.

thats actually one place i was avoiding due to motorcyclists being hassled so much...i guess when i cross into russia at KZ i'll ask the border there if the landslide has been cleared or they have other options...i was trying to get to turkey via the caspian

holodragon 22 Aug 2014 04:33

I just saw a report about the landslide on Uzbek tv, my Russian is poor so thought I would check here. I am in Nukus & am heading for Georgia via the route north of the Caspian sea. If the way into Georgia is blocked what are the other options? I have till the 12th September to exit Russia.

rtwpaul 22 Aug 2014 05:23

right now i'm in samarkand...i'm looking at the same thing, there are ferries across the black sea to turkey and to bulgaria, the road closure is supposed to cleared in two weeks maximum according to the authorities of both countries

there is a ferry from Sochi to Batumi 11:00am Moscow time, on the 5th, 12th and 19th of September, not sure if a bike can go on that though...their email address is : info@morport-sochi.ru

also there is apparently ferry options from Crimea to Istanbul

holodragon 22 Aug 2014 05:50

Is the Crimea a realistic option with the Ukrainian/Russia issues there, will they let travellers in? I have met on chap that came from Ukraine into Russia but he avoided the Crimea.

rtwpaul 22 Aug 2014 05:52

i honestly don't know i just have a friend in the US looking at options for me as my internet here sucks...it would just be a case of contacting them if the border doesn't open in time, the last report i read said 11 days max to clear the border, i have 3500km's to get there so my timing may be just right, let me know if you find other options

holodragon 22 Aug 2014 06:18

will do. I have asked friends in the UK for similar help, if I hear anything (once they have woken up) I will post it here. I will be at Russian/Georgia border in about a week so 11 days may not be too bad.
If your heading for Bukhara I can recommend Hotel Fatima, great location, room & huge breakfast $25 a night.

rtwpaul 22 Aug 2014 08:40

heading the other way to tashkent cause my UZ visa is about to run out so have to go thru KZ, any suggestion for that way would be appriciated

holodragon 23 Aug 2014 15:23

contacted Sochi port via the email address above and just got a phone number by reply. 8-918-409-12-96
Sari Denizcilik are meant to operate a ferry from Sochi to Trabzon a couple of times a week but not had a response to email.
Stantours can help organise an Azerbaijani e visa then there is the option of ferry from Actau to Baku.
Going to monitor landslide clearance but will probably head north now back towards Moscow and Latvia border.
