Stalin's "Dead Road" from Nadym to Salekhard
Hi.
Preparing a quick trip. Anyone has driven on the Dead Road or has got further info? Is it possible to drive this stretch in winter (march)? In normal cars (non 4x4)? Is it possible to drive from the main Transsiberian Highway via Tobolsk, Surgut, Urengoy, Nadym all the way up to to Salekhard? Are there any closed cities on the way? Do I need a border permit? Can I try to drive through without a permit? Is it possible to get local taxis or hitchhike on the Dead Road in winter? Many thanks. |
So, the answer to all questions is YES.
It was a quick but great trip in the cold :freezing: Please find my report here: Hitchhiking Stalin's Dead Road above the Polar Circle http://photos.travellerspoint.com/32...ard-Igarka.jpg Stalin's Dead Road or Dead Trassa (Transpolarnaya Railway) between Salekhard and Nadym http://photos.travellerspoint.com/32...145138-1-1.jpg Meeting Nenets reindeer nomads on the ice road. |
