SOS shock broken in UB!!!
1 Attachment(s)
Hi,
as seen in the picture my rear shock is broken. It,s an WP 4014 fusion (if I recall well). I mounted a year ago, some 30000km. It broke in my trip to Gobi desert, on the way back to UB, some 80km from the city. The bike wasn't with the panniers, just an ortlieb bag and my self, a light, 60 kg, guy. Any way, my options are to try and fix it here, or have a new one send in from Europe. From the WP the thing is made of "Anodised aluminium CNC machined parts". As for the first option, i guess the best solution would be to made a all new piece in iron or steel. The Europe solution, I am going to investigate the fastest option and see what happens. Any tips, comments ideas, would be great. Cheers |
you can definately get something like that made up in Russia (Ulan Ude) .. but I also think it wont be too hard to get one made in UB.
Try Steppenfuchs ... Steppenfuchs Motorcycle Tours, Mongolia ... if he cant make one, he will know who in UB can. Telefon: +976) 70 11 13 23 e - Mail: info (attt) mongolei [doott] com Get one made in stainless steel or steel. It will be stronger than the alloy it was originally. |
May be possible to have a U shaped steel plate made up to fit inside the broken part and bolted through? I don't know how much clearance you have between this bit and the chock of course, but from the witness marks there looks to be enough metal there.

Hi
I tried Steppenfuchs and some other local "ktm" mechanic but the answer is no. The difficulty seems to be the thread of the bolt part of the piece. I will try to get a funduro suspension (I think it would work) from a local guy, but is not a sure thing. To get a new suspension from Europe, besides Motorworks, does anybody as any ideas? |
machine shops, railroad shops
Man that thing is a snap to make for any machine shop, try train yards etc they usually have all the tools, lathes etc
I could make that if I had just the basic tools and welder and heat and for heavens sake use steel next time \Zig :scooter: |
There is a shop in UB listed on this thread

Hi,
first of all thank you for your tips. The "ktm mechanic", (his name is Ratna), is from the ArKa shop mentioned by Chris in Tokyo. He then introduce me to a guy that has at least 6 or 7 unused, semi-incomplete Bmw 650 Funduro in a warehouse behind a closed door... just 500m from the Oasis. So I ended up buying a brand new Funduro rear shock (it was still in the bmw cardboard paper package, directly from Berlin...) that seems to fit the GS, a new DID chain, a clutch cable, and some bearings. All 400euros. And I am ready to go again. As for the WP suspension, I wrote an email to Austria, still no answer. I don't know why it broke. Here's what happened: 1 the bike started to bottoming, the tire hitting the mudguard (I think there was some leak in the preload adjuster cable, so there was no preload) 2 I increase compression to avoid it 3 In a really slow corrugation track the bolt that hold the bottom of the shock broke. 4 One of the WP shock washers was worn out, and I replace it for another one but not the same size. So the new bolt was thinner than the original. 5 Almost 1000k later the suspension broke. First on one side, 2 or 3 km later the other side also broke, destroying also the bearing in the deflection lever. 6 I couldn't go anywhere. 7 1 minute later I got a lift from a very nice mongolian couple that brought me to UB. Now, a bit tired of the Oasis burgers, it's time for Russia again, and the Baikal. Once again thanks Cheers |
