Old thread I know. Here is an update for those currently in the area:

I did this route West to East a couple of days ago. No problems at all. Rivers all very low this time of the year. Started noonish in Khorog and reached the big lake an hour before sunset, going at a leisurely pace. Lake campside around 4200m, very cold at night. My water bottles froze.

Pamir highway on motorbike

Hi,

I´m planning to ride in the Pamir highway in Tajikistan and maybe Afghanistan in 2015. I already know the Kyrgyz part from Sari Tash to Osh.

Does anybody have any updates on the road conditions, if there are enough gas stations along the road and also if any permit is needed? I guess there is no carnet needed for Tajikistan, right? Any maps that you could recommend to download/buy for this part of the world?

Anybody who is going to do the same in 2015? I have no fixed dates but most probably either in July 2015 or Sept.

Thanks a lot.

Gecko maps The Pamirs is best, available from Gecko direct, Stanfords or quite cheaply in Khorog at the PECTA info centre in the town park, easy to find.
fuel available in Khorog. Only 80 available in Murghab, I next fueled up in Zong on the Wakhan corridor.
Road from Sary Tash to the border is mostly dirt which can get quite muddy if it has been raining, a small stream to cross plus a splash through. Once through the Tajik border there was a washed out bridge with a flattened out track leading across the dry & not very wide river bed.
Most of the Pamir highway is asphalt of varying condition, some badly corrugated, some very bumpy & potholed but mostly ok. The high passes are dirt track but no problem.

No carnet required. You will need the GBAO permit along with your Tajikistan visa, there are police checkpoints along the road and a military checkpoint along the Wakhan corridor road plus one near Kulob.

quick queastion

is a klr too heavy realistically for this area or is it easy enough even on such a heavy bike

considering a dr350 instead

also wondering about how long it takes to get from the uk to places like this and rough estimate of costs for the time period

thanks in advance

You will do just fine with the KLR between Murgab and Khorog on the M41 or the Whakan Valley road. Graveled and potholed, that is as bad as it gets. From Murgab North it is mostly paved with some easy dirt (and potholes). If you start to deviate from these main roads it will depend on your skills.

All Ok

The road from Wakhan to Khorog and Morguab is not that bad and you can easily make it. I've little skills and a yaaha 660XTR and no problem at all.

Good luck.
