Need Help Near Vladivostok

07 July 2010

I am new to the forum and need some help. I have a 2004 R1150GS Adventure that just lost the starter...about 2-3 days west of Vladivostok. For a number of reasons, I have been stranded for ten days. I have a couple of things I need help with currently.

1. I need to know if there is anyone in Russia with a starter for this bike or someone coming this way soon who could bring one? For a number of reasons, it will take 2-4 weeks to receive on in from DHL/UPS/FedEx. I am fine with a used one. Mine cannot be repaired...be down this road.
2. I will need to extend my visa...how do I do this without hitting the major cities? If I just show up to the border, with a written note somewhat official, how hard will it be at the border? Can money take care of this...any experience is helpful!

If this is the WRONG place to post this, please let me know. Kindly respond to my outside email address at chris@planetearthquest.com as I am limited on communication and this is best.

Thanks so much!

Chris

Hi Chris,

Sad to hear this. A finish guy with a 1200 ADV (think u had already email contact) and I are in Vladivostok actually. Asked the Irontigers this morning when I read your post and they said that there are no bmw parts availlable and no dealer in Vlad.

Did u try to contact the bmw dealer in Krasnojarsk (not really sure according to the website if its a car or a moto dealer)

If they can help u try to get the bike there. I saw many trucks without cargo on the way down there, try to get on one. The good thing is that the Russians are all very friendly and helpful, just try it.

Greetings from Vlad!

Contact dealer in Krasnojarsk

They are a dealer for both cars and motos, but they did not have much in the way of spares I asked for. Plenty of new BMW clothing though!!!

Chris's problem has been solved by Motoreiter and is now in the hands of post/couriers - as on his other thread.

In 80%+ of the cases the starter on oilhead BMWs can be repaired by a starter mechanic that you should find almost in any bigger village everywhere in the world if you ask around. The design is almost exacly the same like on cars.

If it's fried, they'll rewire it (yes, they really can!), if the magnets are loose, they'll reglue 'em. If the pendix is fecked, they can grind out a new one that at least temporarily will get you somehwere where you can get a new one.

theres 2 vlad moto locations,
but I think this is the one that also contains the clubhouse.

г. Владивосток, ул.
Vladivostok, st.
Иртышская 23,
Irtysh 23
tel.
(4232) 36-75-14, 240-940,

its off the main road going into vlad, about 5-6km before the center, on the east side. When you go up the street, its about 1km down, on the left, theres a guarded parking lot, & the shop is on the back side of that lot.
the clubhouse is above it

Russian online maps

Hi Doug,
For a map there, just plug that address into the search filed at the top of the page on Яндекс.Карты and it will show you the location.
This also converts to cyrillic addresses entered in latin letters if you don't have Russian input on your computer.
MUCH better than Google Maps if you need maps of Russian cities.
Basically the only road you can see in Google Maps for Vladivostok is the M-60 going out of town.

You can find all sorts of neat things surfing the net when you should be working...
