It's nice to see you all again, even if it's thanks to an asshole at a border.

Hi
Nice to hear from you bier

By the way, that is not just one asshole.
From the border ( moneychanger ) to olgii you find more of them, and this one I wrote about is a group of gangsters.....

IrregularIrishman 30 Oct 2015 07:23

Hey Klaus, I'm sending you a PM with a quick question.

PropTP 31 Oct 2015 07:41

IrregularIrishman 31 Oct 2015 20:31

This is the Kazakh family that robbed me in Tsagaanuur, on my way to exit at Tashanta, late September 2010.
http://www.schoolbushomestead.com/Ri...MGP2212-X3.jpg

Invitation for tea, cheese & bread by the fella in the red shirt. While I was distracted, some of the others cleaned out my riding jacket -- multi-tool, digital camera, tire pressure gauge (bastards!), a few other odds and ends.

Agree with the previous post, no problem with the rest of Mongolia, or the Kazakhs in Kzakhstan, just the ones in Mongolia near the border. In fact, Mongolia was one of the highlights of my trip.

Hello guys
I will go to Mongolia in August, news about this person?

Thank you

klausmong1 16 Jun 2016 17:55

It is not just one person, it is a group.

But you won't have any problem, as long you don't stop at these guys.

Just go ahead and go to Olgii and everything will be OK.

Only Hasslers will try to stop you.

Well I recently crossed from Tashanta to Olgi.
At the boarder it was hassle free, except the insurance, which I paid a little to much.
Then on our way a nice looking guy wanted to invite us to his Ger for a tea.
We apologized for not having the time to join him. He left very quick but just to wave at us on the road to Olgi and pretending to have a bike problem. We waved back an rode on:oops2:
The a little further some guys on a motorbike wved for fuel. Caution, they take children wirh them to build up confidence, we waved back and rode on.
Those two tries to wave us down were clearly scams...
We don´t know what would have happend, we didn´t risk anything and don´t let us wave down on the street...
Then we arrived in Olgi, and immeadetely we were followed by a car wirh two guys in it. And this was bloody dangerous, as this ass...le was driving next to me and trying to stop me while pretending to bump into my bike. He was really threatening me. It was awfully dangerous and it could have easily hapened that he bumped me off my bike. Very, very, very aggresive and threatening it was.
I didn´t even look at him, I just was concentrating on my path and riding my way, as if he wasn´t there. It would have been impossible to look after him and my pace. His actions were unpredictable.
Once arrived at the blus wulf Ger camp he immeadetely drove off.
Just to be replaced by another car. A well known guy with his wife, child and baby in the car was asking if I look for accomodation. With a question mark in my face I looked at him as I was clearly entering the blue wulf Ger camp...
I said I will stay here, and clearly not go with him to beeing robbed during the night, and how his jaw and teeth were doing. They looked quite well. With pure hooror in his face he hurried away like he saw a devil...We were laughing for quite a while.
Olgi was a truly shitty place for us. We stayed two nights, visited the town, the market, and met some nice people though.
But as we left the town we had to stock up on fuel and supplies. And we were clearly observed by some guys with phones, who were talking about us.
As we missed our way out of the city and took some backroads (my GPS had an error) they lost the pace of us.
Again a very scary experience. We don´t know if this was a mere paranoiy or for real a threat.
But we all felt very uncomfortable in the city, not relaxed and always very aware and checking the surrounding when moving in town.
So be aware and awake there. Don´t stop for any reason on your way to Olgi and stay on your pace to a save place, even if you´re threatened by aaggresive drivers. don´t even look at them!!!
Stay save and keep the rubber side down...

P.S.: that was ca. 3 weeks ago. We´are in Ulan Ude now and gladly made it out of Mongolia on the election day (no alcohol was sold that day, but everyone was drunk...)

IrregularIrishman 15 Jul 2016 14:34

Brilliant Kurvenfieber! The fact he had a look of horror on his face brings a smile to mine, haha! It's a pity that his jaw and teeth are back to normal now, hopefully it cost him a huge amount of money to get them fixed :)

Nice work on avoiding any trouble, especially with the car swerving at you. It sounds like the area is getting dodgier year on year. I actually tried to raise the issue with a tourism department in Olgii with the help of someone working in the tourist industry in UB but they fobbed it off as I imagine a story like that getting out would impact on the amount of tourists visiting Olgii.

ilpo 17 Jul 2016 16:54

Had similar experience on 6/27/2016 in Olgii, car trying to run me off from road, got me blocked almost once until I noticed his game. Then I just accelerated quickly out from the city, he did not follow me any further...

No idea what was his business, he was trying to say something but I was not in a mood to listen that.

About the insurance, I just happened to be out of money and showed my Visa card which they of course were not able to process. Then they suggested that I take one of the guys with me, drive to Olgii, take money from ATM and then drive this guy back to the border again. No deal.
Next one was that I got insurance papers and a separate note with bank account number for the lady where I should pay the sum in the bank in Olgii (original sum was 60000, in the separate note it said 80000)... Did not pay that way either...

eurasiaoverland 17 Jul 2016 21:46

Obviously something nasty is going on around Olgii, nothing unusual in an area that sees lots of foreigners, though it sounds rather unpleasant and I sympathise with those who have suffered as a result.

I passed twice through Olgii in 2010 and never had any problems at all.

What I really want to say is that I also travelled down the extreme west of the country, through Deluun and Bulgan to another Bulgan pretty much on the Chinese border. Almost everyone I met was Kazakh and I never had any bad vibes at all. So please don't write off all Mongolian Kazakhs!

Otherwise we could say to steer clear of people in Romania, Peru etc etc where plenty of people also get robbed.

Has anyone tried going to the police? Probably won't be very helpful on a single basis, but if enough people go with stories, photos etc, maybe something would get done. I was under the impression that law enforcement in Mongolia was pretty straight-up.

We had mostly good experiences in i we had mostly good experiences in the Olgii area. The eagle guy is certainly entitled to his business, he went to the trouble to raise that eagle from hatchling. The "money changer" in the village before the border told us there was a $50 tax on travelers leaving Mongolia. my daughter gave him a strong piece of her mind and I was going to tell him that we would be happy to pay $50 to someone in uniform. We did a few good deeds, we pulled a 25 tonMercedes tractor trailer out of the mud and towed a broken down bus a few kilometers. We visited with we visited with Tilek can a village north of Khodv and spend the night next to his ger. We made a contribution to his Kazakh English dictionary publication. It is important to contribute something to the local economy.
