Mongolia - Russia border crossing points
 

The FCO website says:

"There are only six border points open to British passport holders. They are at Ulaanbaatar’s international airport; the road/train crossing to China at Zamin Uud, the road crossing to Russia at Tsagaannuur in the far west; the train crossing to Russia at Sukhbaatar and the road crossings to Russia at Altanbulag and Ereen-Tsav in the north east."


I thought it was possible to cross by road at Sukhbaatar, heading to Ulan Ude. I can find Ereen and it's quite a bit further east, can't find Altanbulag except just west of UB.

So - best border to crossing to use if heading to UU / Baikal?

Altanbulag (Алтан-булак) is due south of Lake Baikal, just inside Mongolia from Кяхта in Russia.

However my atlas (2008 edition) does not show an international Border and Customs office there.

But it does show a Border and Customs about 30+ km further west, between Сухз-батор (Mongolia) and Наушки (Rus) - the route you were thinking about.

Whichever is correct on the ground, they are sufficiently near to each other not to matter too much, having got that far!

There are two border crossings...Altubulag and Sukhbataar that will get you to UB from Russia on the main road. Either was available to vehicles in July 2007...be prepared for a wait if you're not on a moto.

The one out west in Tsaangur is easy but not quick. If the Russians and Mongolia border officials could coordinate their lunch and sieste times, it would be quicker...but don't hold your breath...just enjoy the sky...stunning!

We crossed at the Кяхта (Kayxhta -sp??) in Russia in Aug 08. had no problems at all.

The two crossings near Sukhbaatar are two of the above 6:

Sukhbaatar to Naushki is a RAIL crossing only. The ROAD crossing 25 km east of there is Altanbulag - Kyakhta. It you want to remain on your bike, you have to cross at Altanbulag - Kyakhta. (you still have to drive thru Sukhbaatar anyway)

The EreenTsav crossing is over 1000 km further east ... right in the eastern most corner of the country.

Of the 6 crossings, only 4 are road crossings. Obviously the airport is one that is not, and Sukhbaatar - Naushki is also not a road border..

So to answer your original question, the ONLY crossing you can use by bike from UU to UB (without a 3000 km detour one way or the other) is head for Kyakhta, and cross to Altanbulag.

HI Guys,

Don't rely on crossing on Eastern border crossing Ereentsav although it's officially International border crossing to cross here for third country residen't is highly unpredictable. I had some American's who wanted to cross there to Russia so I called the border control headquarter in UB they said you can cross Mongolian side but not sure whethere the Russian side will let in. They said to check with that they will need to call Moscow to confirm from their side. So it's very tricky so I gave up.
So I also think Altanbulak is the better choice.

does anybody know if there is any way of crossing the border from Russia to Mongolia at the northern part of Hovsgol Lake?

from what I can tell from the research I did on it there is a border crossing, but it is locals only.

Not yet at the moment for third country citizen (other than Mongolians and Russians). They are (Ministry of tourism and Border Authorities) talking about opening it. I've driven through the Eerentsav border from Solovyevsk in Russia in 2010. Unless rules have changed, which seems unlikely, it's definitely open to anyone with a Russian and Mongolian visa. Worth the drive down to Choibalsan through herds of hundreds of roaming wild gazelle; never seen anything like it in Asia.

North of Khovsgol Lake was definitly closed to non-Mongolians or Russians in 2010.
