If you type 'Mongolia' at the top of the page and press 'search' - you will find many references to Mongolia and the answers you seek.

Grant Johnson 26 Dec 2005 20:56

Yep, I get 2,855 references to Mongolia in an HU site search - oughta be just about everything you could want in there!

NOTE: This post has been moved from the Southern Asia forum to the Northern Asia forum.

Tell me where you want to get in Mongolia. What is your route? I can recommend a southern way from Tashanta to UB via Hovd, Altai-Gobi, Arvaiheer, etc. There are 1450 km off-road (Tashanta-Arvaiheer)and 450 km paved road (Arvaiheer-UB)
The road condition in mountain areas is bad. The much depends on weather.
You will need in about 250-300 km without refueling. The fuel is not so bad. In a small settlements I had to refuel 76-octane only. But I had no problem with my Africa Twin because of it.

He live near Czechia - Germany border. Last september I have taken their route across Mongolia. Marek is very good russian speaker. He told me a lot of about Mongolia. I have next plane: I start from Prague approximately 10.May. I will go to Moscow, catch train to Barnaul. There I visit my friend and Altaj- Us-Koksa (there I was 15years ago with kayak on river Katun).
Next I continue to Mongolia over border Tasanta. I will go by direction to city Altaj, down to Gobi visit Czech geologic expedition and next north to lake Hovsgol and over border Kjachta to Bajkal. From Irkutsk I will go by train to Moscow. I think, that I return home on 30.June.
I look anybody for all trip or part of trip. If I don’t look, I will go single.

Hi Weber.

Be carefully on the mountain road between Ulgiy and Hovd at Buratyn pass. There is a big plateau with a lot of small rivers and lakes. And I think it will be possible to see a big water there in spring or after big rain.

Thansk you Alex! If I will have bad weather, I rent GAZ and guide! I am carefully.

Alex Rubtsov 15 Feb 2006 21:39

Hi.

If you will go from Altai to Bayanhongor take left towards north. The beaten track go south via Ulaan Shalin Holloy. It is a Gobi. The southern road is better than northern one. But there is no any bridge above the Baydrag river. You will see it near Boon Tsagaan lake. It is a no problem for UAZ, ZIL and GAZ but for the bike...When I was there in autumn it was possible to pass the river with a motorcycle. But it always depends on weather.

Alex, thansk you! Good advice for me. How Mongolian people understand russian?
Ja nemnogo panimaju i citaju po rusky! Na Altaji ja chocu ucitsja po rusky. Kde ty zivjos? V kakoj strane?
I hope that you understand, that I not write by azbuka. :-)

Weber 16 Feb 2006 00:07

From Tasanta I will go to city Olgij, city Chovd and city Altaj. From Altaj I will go to Gobi, visit my friends - geologig expedition. It is 185km southeast (I have waypoints for route). Next I will go to city Altaj and north to Hovsgol.

scottw 16 Feb 2006 05:34

Weber: Most Mongolians over the age of 30 understand Russian and can speak it. Many are fluent, especially anyone over that age with an education.

Under age 30 most do not speak or understand Russian.

Privet Weber
Ja horosho ponimaju tebja.I live in Tol`atti. It is a town at the Volga river 1000 km towards east from Moscow.
The russian language is very useful in Mongolia especially outside of UB. I want to tell you about one. If you go to sleep in hotel choose the hotel for foreigners only! The building must have a signboard "HOTEL" in english. The anyone another are brothel for natives! I spent the night at one of them in Bayanhongor. It was a hell!!! I did not close my eyes for night! Before go to bed check the bedsheet. It maybe was used. And forget about pillowcases!
Ja mogu pisat` tebe po russki esli hochesh.
