see my post on 'what to do if you have an accident, it worked for me, the police were very helpful, even before they knew my friend knew the chief of police!

Even though insurance is compulsory now in Russia, I would bet the vast majority of Russians driving about don't have insurance.
You can have all sorts of bits of paper stating this and that if you get stopped, but it doesn't mean the insurance is genuine or paid up.

couldn't agree more, I was very lucky, mainly in having someone who spoke the lingo and knew the right people! during the process I spoke to the british consul who said that my best chance of sorting it all out rested with the people I knew, they could achieve more than the embassy ever could! its not what you know.......
I also got pulled over more than a dozen times for speeding and other 'misdemeanours' but got off virtually every time and only paid minimal 'fines' when I didn't, maybe you make your own luck. be polite but don't be a victim, give the appropriate courtesy, play the ignorant tourist and try and establish some common ground/repartee. finally don't drive a flash motor, If it's dented and got a bent coat hanger for an aerial you don't look like someone they are going to get much money out of. one copper even told me where the speed traps were ahead (afetr laughing at my aerial)!

I actually had an accident - someone went into the back of my car. You can read all about it on my post about my russian trip.
Les
PS I was only pulled 3 times - 2x documents and 1x speeding - again no fine. Basically I think that they let you off because they have NO WAY of enforcing the fine and it will remain unpaid. By NO WAY I mean you leave the country after your holiday and what can they do about that?

They have a thing called the 'protocol' It is a form they fill out to prosecute you for speeding etc. It involves sending your licence off so you are stuffed, hence why it's easier to pay. If you take your time you will probably be ok, or if you are off the main routes but I had to drive Kazan to UK (just under 4000 miles)in 31/2 days to get back for work so had to press on a bit. The 'fines' weren't big so I regarded them as a toll for making a bit of progress. Hope all was well after your accident, eastern european driving is something to be seen to be believed, worse than india I reckon!!
