KKH to Mongolia via Kashger

Apologies this is similar to a thread below but I am planning LWR at the moment and want to better understand the options available.

If you were coming up KKH and intended to get to Torugat or Irkeshtam and then on into Mongolia...

Is it possible and which would be the best route in terms of scenenry, hassle etc?

How much would it likely cost to get something arragned with Newland etc?

any tips / adivce?

cheers,

David

I did it the other way, through the Tourgart pass down into pakistan last year. You need to have a guide to sort everything out for you and you should have no problems, you just have to pay a lot of money. If you can group together with other people it can bring the cost down a little.

I don't know about the irkstan pass but the scenery on the tourgart pass is nice but was not as amazing as the scenery you'll see when you enter Kyrgyzstan. If the other pass turns out to be easier i'd go for that option. Either way the guide will sort it all out for you and will take you through the chinese border which is the main problem area.

Hope this helps

By "then on into Mongolia", do you mean through Kazakhstan and Russia first?
Or back to China and across to Mongolia?
Last I heard, Kyrgyzstan doesn't border Mongolia...

yes...

Is there a particular guide / agency that you'd recommend?

As Chris says, Mongolia only borders China and Russia, and the only place foreigners (i.e. not Chinese or Mongolians) can enter Mongolia from China is at Eren Hot/Zamyn Uud, in the south Gobi. It's a long, long way across China to there from Kyrgyzstan.

Apologies I was a bit vague. I meant KKH to Mongolia via China, Kyrgyztan and Kazakhstan. Doing some hunting KKH - China sounds expensive. Worthwhile?

Looks like you need to look at some maps... KKH runs from Islamabad to Kashi.

Do they allow hunting up the KKH. Thought there were enough herberts with guns up there.:innocent:
The northern part (Pakistan) is a Nature Reserve, so any hunting wont be legal.

John, I think he is "hunting" for routes not pandas:smartass:.

David,
Check out this thread, it has some quotes received by others.

You are looking for a guide/permits from Pakistan to Kyrgystan, right?
Note that you will need a visa for Russia too (possibly a transit visa will do) as Kazakhstan doesn't border Mongolia either, even if it looks like it does on some maps.

What do you want to do AFTER Mongolia? If you want to go back into Russia, I think you'll need a double-entry visa for Russia. And that might be hard to get outside your home country.
Maybe contact "Flanmaximondo" here on the hubb. She got the Russian visa in Cambodia. Had to become a Cambodian citizen, then get a Russian business visa.
Where there's a will, there's a way....
