Anything simple, light, japanese, carburettored, that you can gets aftermarket bits for easily to suit the vast Mongolian distances ... specifically oversize fuel tanks and the like.

If I had to pick one bike, I would probably say go for a Suzuki DR-Z400 and stick a 28 litre Aqualine tank on it.

I heard about some Russian bikes - Planeta , did you talk about them?
How much does a bike should cost there ?

Thanks

Many Mongolian herders ride the IZH Planeta: WWW.IZHMOTO.RU / Road motorcycle IZH Planeta 5. You can buy one new in UB for only a few hundred dollars. They are very simple machines but do break down very frequently so you should only take this option if you are a very good bush mechanic and you will need to carry along a deent set of tools and spares. I do know some guys who bought Planetas and had a good several week ride through Mongolia and then sold them for almost the same as they paid for them. But they were good mechanics and had to make major repairs several times along the way.

It is possible to do long journeys on an Izh Planeta 5 - one of the finest thing to come out of Izhevsk since the Kalashnikov.

Here is a great story about a Russian girl, who rides from St Petersburg to Magadan on a Planeta 5 (7 weeks ... in 2005 I believe) accompanied by Africa Twin riding boyfreind. She doesnt mention anything about maintenance and repairs in here but no doubt there was a fair bit of that.

as I'm not a good mechanic i don't think that this bike would
be a good choice.
how much should the Suzuki\Yamaha\klr650 you mentioned should cost (a used one, what about rent)?

Would I be able to sale one of this bike when i live the country?

Thanks

Matey,

As the others have said, talk to Rene or Sybil at the Oasis. He can steer you in the direction to by a new Yamaha and they will purchase it back after you have finished with it. A 450 is not really necessary if you are only doing shortish trips around Mongolia. You probably don't even need a 250. Throw a set of Andy Strapz panniers over it and you are away.

last two questions...

do you know if i need a motorcycle driver license in order to drive in Mongolia ? does the police check those things?
do i need some other papers in order to buy a motorcycle thier ?

Thanks again:)

scottw 17 Feb 2009 21:15

Baror: You don't need a Mongolian motorbike license to ride in Mongolia if you don't live there. You should probably have a motorcycle license from some country though, in case you have an accident or some kind of other road trouble. If something bad happens it won't look good for you if you don't have any kind of motorcycle license.

As for paperwork when you buy a bike, if you buy it from a guest house they can help you with the process. Really it's all pretty loose, especially if you will be riding mostly in the countryside. If you're just buying a bike for the short term, you can "buy" it from the guest house or someone with an agreement that they will buy it back from you when you're done (minus any damage and some $$ for the use, of course). If you work out something like that then the papers can just stay in their name the whole time since you're really just renting it.

HI Folks,

Thanks a lot for your comments. I almost made a deal of buying this bike. I just talked with the guy and he is agreed to deliver to my sister in US I also need one more bike like this. I think it's pretty good size bike for Mongolia. I also spoke with Rene she said she is not renting bike's anymore cause people break a lot and really hard to find spare parts in Mongolia so she sold all the bike's but I will rent this bike's I already have some client who will ride this bike in August but the rest of the time it's free so whoever want to rent this bike's let me know.
I also recognize you Scott I think we met once at the embassador SH house.
Anyway thanks a lot guys if any of you around this part of the world pls let me know will be glad to see comrade's.

Me me me, I would like to rent this bike!

Hi,

I am travelling from England to Mongolia, and hope to arrive there about the end of May.

A good friend of mine (experienced motorcyclist and mechanic) will be flying out to visit me there, and he wants to rent a bike so we can do some travelling.

We were thinking of buying a bike, and selling it again before we leave, because renting is so EXPENSIVE.
We would be interested in renting this for maybw 2 or 3 weeks.

Can you pm or email me please, I would like to know a bit more about prices.
many thanks
