Extend temporary import-Russia

Hi all..

In July this year i was crossing Russia and had some coffe in Ulan bataar and the up towards Lena Highway to Yakutsk, but a crashed due to a front wheel punture and wounded my knee so i had to fly home to recover. So now is my my bike left ca 200km north of Tynda and the temporary import time for the bike will go off the 18th of October, i know that it is possible to extend this time, so if this could be possible i maybe could leave the bike over there and get back in next summer, june or so and drive back to Sweden.

Any one who know more about how to extend the temporary importation and where?

Possible to do it in lets say St petersburg only with me in person being there and bike reg doc´s??

Or maybe direct at the Finish-Russian border at vaalimaa ( Big road towards Vyborg from helsinki to Petersburg)

Another way to do it could be if i fly over now and drive the bike down to Mongolia lave it there and pick up next summer, but anyone who nows how long you can leave a bike in Mongolia? same thing this with temp imports?

If someone have some more info about this issue it would be a great help for me.

Your temp import can only be extended for the length of your visa (actually your visa registration), which I think is typically 3 months.

In theory I think you are supposed to renew the temp import in the place where you are registered, but am not sure how strict they are on that.

I've renewed my temp import several times, and they've never asked to see the bike, so I guess you could do it in St Pete without the bike, as long as you register in a hotel there first.

Of course things never work quite the way you expect here in Russia, so I can't guarantee that what I've described above will work, but that's my best guess. Please let us know how things work out!

Ok, but where do you extend your temp import doc´s? possible at the border crossing or some custom office in towns?

Leaving bike in Mongolia is possible

Sorry to hear about the accident.

I don't know anything about leaving the bike in Russia but I'm currently in Mongolia and have met several bikers leaving their bikes in Ulan Baator for the winter and planning to fly back next year to finish their trip.

All these were being left at the Oasis Hostel (where all travellers meet in UB) and the process appeared to be the owners simply wrote a letter to Customs saying what was happening and you presented that when leaving the country. I don't know whether the owners charge for this but it would seem to be a fairly easy process. Oasis Hostel has a web site so you should be able to find the contact details with a Google search.

Good luck

Sorry, I just saw your question. I don't think you'll be able to extend at the border, you'll have to do it in a town. I've only done this this Moscow, but I'm sure you'd be able to do it in St Pete as well, I don't know if there is somewhere closer to the border.
