Easiest country to store a bike in mid Eurasia?
Hi All,
I'm planning a solo rtw starting from Ireland heading east. I can't get the time or the money to do it all in the one go - so I have it in mind to do it in stages where I leave the bike and return home in between. I've bought a cheap and cheerful 2003 KLR650 and will work on it over this winter setting off next May with a view to seeing how far 6 weeks or so takes me. Proposed route is Ireland, Turkey, Georgia, Armenia, Iran, Stans & Pamir, Almaty, Barnaul and then reasonably direct to Magadan, then to North America, probably via south Korea and Vancouver. Ireland to Istanbul will be very quick as I have been through this area many times before. I propose to make Ireland to North America in 2 stages, leaving the bike wherever I make it to at the end of stage 1 and flying home, returning 10 months later to pick it up and continue - that's the theory anyway!:innocent:
If the second 6 week stage of my trip is to include the time to ship from Magadan to USA (I believe that will involve cargo ship from Magadan to Vlad followed by ferry to South Korea followed by air to Vancouver) then where should I aim to hang up my boots between stage 1 and stage 2 so that both journeys can be achieved in about the same time frame of 6 weeks?
In fact, it's probably a bit more complex than that and maybe my question should be where legally can I make this happen without too much complexity regarding vehicle import laws etc. From what I have read here on the forums some countries maybe easier than others.
Suggestions links or comments really appreciated!
