Crossing Mongolian/China border

Can anybody tell me if I can cross from Mongolia into China at Erenhot(main route between Ulaan Bataar to Beijing). From there I want to cross China down into Loas and onward home to OZ. I have read as much as possible and gather that some spots you can enter no problems and others are no go.....can I cross this border....Hope so, would hate to have to fly my bike....defeats the purpose!!!

Yes, durign my trip in summer 2004 there was absolutely no problem to cross the Mongolian/Chinese border at the international border station at Zamyn Uud/Erenhot ...provided you have arranged all necessary permits and escort by Chinese 'guide'well before starting your trip. More information on that you will find on my website http://www.tlc-exped.net/Zentralasien.html

Good luck

Thanks mate, but could you tell me more about this 'escort' chinese guide and how to arrange it. Does that mean the escort has to travel with me all the way accross China to the Loas border? And does this cost alot of money for the escort?

Cheers again

Yes indeed, this means that you have to provide a seat inside your vehicle for this Chinese 'guide' or - in case you are riding a bike - the Chinese travel agency will provide an escorting car with driver. And this will come very expensive.

We payed for our 1 month trip from Mongolian border to Kazakhstan (8000 km) via Gobi 3.260 USD including all paperwork (Chinese driver licence and number plates, and all necessary permits which are a lot)

There are not so many agencies interested in escorting a single traveller. I know what I am saying. I am just preparing a trip from Kirgistan to Tibet and Nepal and with exception of Steve Larson's Asianexplorations in Kashgar there was only one other company to make me an offer up to now.

You must be aware that it will take at least three months for getting all papers and, moreover, you have to make a downpayment prior of getting into business with the Chinese tour operator.

Good luck
