If it is true I will start shipping bike from India next year.

12 years ago accidentally having just a tourist visa in my passport I got in China via Dostyk (Kazakhstan north of Almaty) by my own AT. I had no problems with fueling, getting accommodation etc. I visited Tibet region (Lhasa, Everest BC) with no permits and guides.
It's a kind of lottery, so you can win or loose. Try your own luck but be ready to turn back. As for me I want to try it again, that's the reason I started watching an information about the subject.
