China to Kyrgyzstan (Irkeshtam / Torugart Pass)

I wish to get from China to Kyrgyzstan. There are two borders : Irkeshtam and Torugart. I got a few quotations from the china guides to drop me off Torugart pass, but as I dig a little bit more information on the internet, a few websites and sources say it's not possible to use Torugart Pass to cross into Kygz.

I sent another email to my tour agent and they assured me that it's ok to pass. That and another tour agent also not flinching when I said I wanted to be dropped off at Torugart.

Has anyone recently use Torugart who can shed some light on this ? I wish to get to Bishkek and using the Irkeshtam will increase the # of days required to get there.

into Kyrgyzstan

Hi, so far as I know both passes should work well. I am more in contact in the south (Osh) with tourists and it's quite common they go further over Torugart pass into China.
I don't see any side note on your timing but winter isn't the best time for traveling in these regions. What I am also not sure is, if they are open in winter time.

Good luck,
Dave

Hi,

No problem at Torugart. This June we crossed it with our own EU registered motorcycle. Of course, you should have a Chinese agent/guide to assisst you all the way through China. Very expensive, especially for one bike. We went from Torugart to Mongolia, at Erenhot/Zamyn Uud border crossing...

Just because I am interested, how many days did you spend in china, what was the cost for a guide and did you sleep in Hotels or camping?
I was asking in 2015 also for a guide through china, thats why I am interested in details.

Hello klausmong1,

We spent 20 days in China. As I said, we went from Torugart to Zamyn Uud, alltogether about 5700 kilometers thru China. The agency price for guide and his driver was 6600 euro, plus around 1500 euro our own expenses - fuel, food, tickets, hotels. We slept in decent hotels every night, priced from 30 - 50 USD. Like I said, travelling in China is very expensive, it was more than 60 % of our budget for the whole 100 days trip from Zagreb to Vladivostok and back. We tried to find someone to travel with us so we can share the cost, but no one was interested.

Thanks for the info,
I git a quote for about 4500 USD, but only for 14 days in 2015.

Did not do it then.
