Chechnya

Hi all,

As part of a trip to Oz, I am looking at driving from Russia through to Central Asia and onwards. Now, I am looking at coming down through the Caucuses (sp?), possibly through Georgia onwards to Iran etc. With a slight concern when I first looked at this map, I re-checked and noticed Chechnya was on the way !! (:

Now, currently I haven't done much research, but it seems not the safest place. Checking another thread on this forum someone mentioned catching the Sochi - Trabzon ferry as an alternative.

Does anyone know much about this area and this ferry. Am I looking at a viable option.

Thanks in advance, and I'll continue looking elsewhere too.

Cheers

There is also a ferry from Sochi to Georgia. I believe the Georgian port is Batumi or the next major city north. However, even this may be iffy at the moment with the current tension between Georgia and Russia.

All the land borders between Russia and Georgia/Azerbaijan are "officially" closed to foreigners. This obviously includes the one in Chechnya also.

Forget about it for now!

All borders betwin Russia and Georgia are closed! No way to get there from Russia!
Those guys in Georgian government decided that they are good enough to play games with Russia, but in Russian government we have lot of "nice people" too, so they decided to forget that Georgia exist. Wait for a while, maybe Georgia will understand that it's better for them to be friends with us then to be slaves of US.
Hope it would be fine soon, I wish to go there too, It's amazing I've heard.
Good luck

hi, i recently took a ferry from trabzon to sochi, it was on a cargo boat an the guy who sold me the ticket in trabzon never mentioned that we might be waiting in the harbour in sochi for 2 days waiting for customs to clear us, meanwhile my kazakhi visa was ticking away, but if your going to turkey you shouldnt have the same problem, the crew were super friendly too, everyone i mentioned checnya to in russia went to great lenghts to make me promise not to go there, i went through stravropol an elista buddhist rep, lovely people, i bet georgia is beautiful, but best to play it safe, enjoy! r
