Britain to Ulan Bator

Hi new to this sight, was thinking of a trip next year and been looking into it and was wondering if anyone had any tips on getting into Mongolia from Russia...:helpsmilie:

Ride/drive across one of the border crossings? It is pretty straight forward to cross over.

Crossed the border last week about 1 hour on the Russian side and 1/2 on the Mongol side. All very straight forward.

Hi Chris,

We are doing the Mongolia Charity Rally next year, leaving the UK on July 6th 2013. Maybe our paths will cross. Not decided what we are driving yet but possibly a Transit van as there will be three of us and that way we'll have three seats abreast.

Planning Europe, into Ukraine via Hungary or Slovakia, transit Russia into Kazakhstan, through Kaz and transit Russia via Barnaul into Mongolia, then either northern or southern route to Ulaan Bator.

Borders shouldn't be a problem, apart from the length of time it takes. No carnet required. Sort visas before you go, then when you arrive at the border get your passport stamped, and from customs, your vehicle entry stamped, buy insurance, exchange currency, and you're off.

Have a good trip.

John

Hi
The southern route in Mongolia is the main route and has better roads and more / bigger towns. The northern router however is by far my favourite it is mostly off-road (well just very bad roads and totally off-road if you choose) and far more scenic. It’s day it depends on your tameable if you don’t want to do off-road and are pushed for time go for the southern. But if you want the more scenic route and a better experience take the north. Yes even a transit van will make it but just slower over the very bad bits.
Good Luck and ENJOY :)

FWIW, There's also a route running "parallel" and between both: The "Middle Route". It has a bit of everything and is also very scenic. Everyone I spoke to this summer in UB thought the S route was a combination horridly corrugated and a building site.
