Mongolia to China

Down south from UB to southern border town of Zamiin Uud is not very difficult. UB - Choir - 240 km paved road, Choir - Zamiin Uud is 450 km is just jeep track (a lot of corrugation), the hard part with only a couple of small villages in between where you can get fuel but no hotel, guesthouse.

Hoi Ekke,

Now that the Mongolian economy is booming thanks to Chinese demand for their commodities, expect that road (the main road between China and Mongolia) to be updated in the near future. I would not be surprised if it becomes fully paved in the next 5 years.

Thanks Vette and others, yes this is about what I had been thinking would be typical - maybe even a little slower in some places like through mountains. I had been figuring on averaging about 150 km/day, every day, when you take into account things like local exploration, breaks, delays, and such. So you might do 200km a day for three days and nothing the next. I'm glad that this doesn't seem unreasonable.

The other thing I'm doing is having multiple routes planned so that I can change the plans on the fly - eg. if I feel like sticking around a particular area for a few days, or hurrying through. I'm getting close to finalising it and will post it when done.
