Spring 2017 update - just in time for the riding season

It has been over a year since an update ... so here is an update file of about 20 more waypoints in Central Asia ... taking the total number of waypoints over the 2000 mark. Will have more updates later this summer

Hello all, I have a basic question about using these kind of waypoints on devices other than GPS like Garmin. We are kindof new to the GPS world so am trying to wrap my brain around all these options. We will be riding for a month or so through Mongolia and we have no GPS and were planning to use the osmAND maps app on our Iphone/android phones. The app uses Open Street Maps, and we have downloaded the updated maps for Mongolia.

So I guess the first question is are all these waypoints already on OSM? And if so, I suppose since I have downloaded through osmAND the most recent mongolia maps then those waypoints would already be in there?

Then if not....is there a way we can get these waypoints into osmAND? Or anyone have a better (mobile phone) solution for navigation than osmAND if we are determined not to spend the money on a gps?

Many thanks for the help.

I'm not sure about osmAND. But you can convert the GPX to KMZ easily, and then use Maps.Me, which is very simple and fast, and also uses offline OSM.

I think a lot of these points will not be on OSM, and also these will be generally higher quality and/or more relevant to a lot of what you're doing. I have found using them together is best.

I just converted this file to .gpx from the internet google search

like google : "gdb to gpx"

then moved the gpx file to my android phone

installed GPX viewer app and loaded the map. FLAWLESS

THANK YOU SO MUCH MAN

once I figure out how to add waypoints, I will if im successful in my plans of travel WILL upload for you guys for waypoints not on the map

such as afghanistan/pakistan

One big warning about Menmankana Hotel in this file at Toktogul lake:

be very careful.

This owner ( a woman ) is a big gangster and rips her guests off.

I had really big problems and she stole 100 USD from me.

Also I was in contact with Mara L, some Kasakh offroad enduro Guide, and this woman also ripped 100 USD from him.
She told him, that he had a false 100 USD note, but he did not.
So he had to take back the 100USD and give her a bew one

And all she did was trying to give him her fake money.

I would recommend not to go there and support this gangsterlady.

I had a warning here in this forum already from 2015 !!!!!!

Thanks Klaus, I have ameded the file on page 1 with a brief warning. I think that is betrter than deleting the waypoint. The hotel is on a major route and without a warning, people will assume it is fine.

This thread and the OSM just made me a very happy camper :D. I'm in the middle of planning my trip around Central Asia for this summer and this gold mine could not be have been more suited for my plans. Thanks a lot for the huge effort involved. I'll try to contribute on my return, if I have fresh info.

OK, I am going to try to move out of the stone age and make all this waypoint stuff work. Have used a Garmin 660 for several years but have never used Basecamp. Just downloaded Basecamp and it is only USA map, that is not going to get me through the Stans, so maybe I can get a little help for an old traveler that's not up to speed on this stuff.
As I understand it I need to:
1. download basecamp (but which one)
2. download waypoints to basecamp
3. load the waypoints I want to my GPS
4. ride to China

Thanks

I DID IT!! Basecamp is on my net book and way points are loaded in my Garmin Zumo 660. Was not even that hard or I am now a certifiable electronic device nerd. doh:clap:

Thanks for putting this together, will help immensely on my next escape.

Always nice to read good news. For maps (Stans or whatever), a very good source is: Free worldwide Garmin maps from OpenStreetMap . Just select the area you need, request the download, run the .exe package on your computer and then upload to Garmin using BaseCamp. It should be easy :D.
