working for cash

Hi I am a Brit and want to spent some time in the western US summer 09 before a longer pan-american trip the following winter. I don't want to spend all mycash in the US and end up underfinanced for the next leg. Anyone got experience of working for cash? Anything considerd, I am a capable mechanic, professional security officer, small boat skipper and damm fine at washing up and digging ditches! Seriously is work for cash as easy in the US as it is in the UK if you know how to get it?
I will be on a 6 month visa.
Any help and input is welcome.
Dave

Working for cash

Working part-time for cash is unusual. Part-time Jobs such as tree trimming, landscaping, yard work, painting, etc are common. If you are near a marina, you could probably get some work as a crew member/deckhand on a private boat.

Working for cash is very common in the US, just stay clear of the 'migra' they'll deport your ass if you are caught. Not much danger especially if you stay clear of east LA!

Here is a link to our local job service. Just to give you an idea what wages for regular jobs are. If you are looking for cash jobs develop a good story. Maybe a student or you are headed to south america to volunteer at a mission. We had a frenchman camp in our backyard in washington state for several weeks and he made a ton of money picking apples for cash.

Thanks you guys, I checked out your link Bill and got an idea of whats out there and what it pays. Seems like with what I have and what I can make on the way I can keep going for a good while. No point in looking too far ahead anyway. The trip is what its all about.
Any more information or even job offers will always be welcome. I hope to get over for a visit to meet an old friend in NC early next year check things out and see about bike prices etc my friend will take care of the paperwork, then put things in order back here and take off as soon as possible.

working for cash

your competition will be mexican/guatemalan/ other sth american workers living in the canyons or 5 to a room. They work the fields/construction or landscaping. Often found outside Home depots(B&Q) in the morning looking for day work. If you do get busted, rare for a white guy though, leave the country voluntarily if you can. It does not show on your record.

Thanks for all the input guys. From what I have been hearing lately just getting into your country may be a problem. A new system starts in January 09 called ESTA, Electronic System For Travel authorisation. This works in place of the old visa waiver that we Brits used to enjoy. Now you have to apply for the ESTA before you travel which can at least be done online, and in theory your entire past history is checked with all the worldwide government security organisations to see how much threat you pose. This system is not perfect or infallible to say the least and anyone who has fallen foul of the law anywhere for whatever reason may well be denied entry. I will go through the process in the next couple of days and will report back with whatever happens.
The last time I was in the US was in 1994 flying in to O'Hare and the immigration lady just said "Welcome to America Honey". those were the days!

I used to operate a long distance moving truck. Virtually all of my help with loading and unloading was on a cash basis.

Wasn't uncommon at all to have various Australian/Canadian etc. accents on a day job. Truck drivers don't bother to check for visa credentials when carrying pianos.

Thanks for that, I think I will be able to find work as I need it.
Also regarding the ESTA I did mine online and got my clearance back within minutes. Seems like no problem.

On line Clearance

While the subject of on line security checks is being mentioned...Some travelers had their lap top checked out at the border crossing and on their web site was mention of trying to get some work in a foreign country. They had to do some talking and ended up with a shorter stay then they would of liked. Just thought I'd mention it.

cash

just go to the coffee shop and ask, chit chatting locals will tell you where to find that kind of work. then slid into the saloons in the pm, you may find the guy on the barstool next to you is hiring.:welcome:

Bit of a slowdown

Keep an eye on various news sources. Here in montana jobs are quickly drying up and going away. Can you say depression? Or maybe end of the world as we know it.
