Parking in the US
 

I will arrive Los Angeles with my non-US bike the second day of of June. However, I have to fly to Europe to attend a wedding in the end of the same month, just a few days and I'll be back. Though I wonder if the US custom will be OK with that? As you know, the custom in some countries do not.

Do the US authorities stamp your bike into your passport?

I think that they are two separate issues; your bike and passport are not intertwined here. I live right near the border with Mexico, and there are literally thousands of cars that cross both ways weekly, and I am quite certain that the person and the car/vehicle are not connected via computer.

i don't think you will have any problem parking your bike here while you leave the country.from what i understand your bike will not have anything to do with your passport.are you traveling on a e.u.passport?

Ah yes, another possible issue: In Sumatra my passport became wet, and now you can easily spot the difference between rich and poor countries. That is, the poor countries do not afford waterproof ink. With a machine-readable passport I need no visa for the US, though is it possible that your authorities might make a fuss about the many blurs which origin is unrecognisable? I'm asking because the Australian passport control made a point about it.

Where are you planning to ride after you park, and get back to the US?

Not sure yet. We'll see.

Erik, we have crossed land borders twice in to the US on our TTRE's. First border couldn't be bothered to even look at the bikes (Alaska). Other post had OCR machine that couldn't read our plates (UK). The boss man said just type in GB (our stickers on panniers).
I very much doubt your bike will be tied to your passport.
It is also unlikely you will meet anyone who has seen a TTR or TTRE, we kept being asked "are those KLRs?" etc.

Hi Leigh, good to hear from you. Thank for the info. Balto II is going like a Duracell rabbit. No problems whatsoever. The only thing that annoys me is that the Sachs sucks and I cannot find an aftermarket shock.

Did you ship your bike from UK to Alaska?

How did you arrange US insurance?

Erik, we shipped our bikes uncrated from Heathrow to St Johns, Newfoundland and rode accross and up. Insurance was with Sunrise on Florida, all arranged by phone and fax, it was basic insurance for US and Canada.
