Miami - LA route suggestions
 

Hi!

We're a Danish/Aussie couple who have been travelling around the globe for the last 3 1/2 years on two DRZ400s.

Now the trip is slowly coming to an end and we will spend the next 2-3 months riding through the Southern States from Miami to LA from where we will ship the bikes back to Australia.

Can anyone recommend any nice places to go see on the way and some nice roads - on as well as off-road?

Also, if anyone knows of any nice places to set up a tent on the way, we'd really appreciate it!

If you like to visit Museum, there is amazing motorcycle museum in Birmingham, Alabama. This museum is called Barber motorcycle museum and it is amazing.

Quite close is also "Tail of the Dragon", famous local road.

The most southern route would be either Interstate 10 (not recommended unless you are trying to get across the country quickly) or a parallel route on 'lesser' roads to take in the 'flavor' the US has to offer. The reason for the southern route suggestion is weather will change any day/week now, and any east/west route further north (i.e. Route 66) or even farther north will take you to high elevations where you could get caught in a blizzard or snow in general. In Arizona, there are plenty of places up north (along Route 66) especially on the Navajo Nation to see. But the weather could change for the worse this time of year. Not trying to scare you or discourage you, but just keep this in mind. The weather is unseasonably warm right now, however.


If you can get to the scenic parts, do it. Otherwise, your compromise will be to take a southern route (not as scenic). I live in the southwest corner of Arizona where we are not affected or worry about snow, and a few hours east of us, where you enter Arizona in the southeast corner, you can visit some scenic areas such as Bisbee, Tombstone, Tucson, and heading west, through Yuma where I live (not much to see), and even take a detour through northern Mexico (or a day or few hour trip), head west to San Diego. Again, this could be a compromise route--once you get to San Diego, and California in general, you won't have the weather to worry about unless you head into some of the mountains, but California itself, just the coastal areas, are worth it.
